Hi All,

Help! I want desperately to obey the rules and help my hairdresser help me in both growing my hair out AND returning it to a healthy state.

I've had damage from a year or so of highlights, a bad haircut, and gosh knows what else. Anyway, I am dealing with some breakage and split ends ON TOP of the fact that my hair is about 80% gray, sooo, I need a touch up every 3 weeks!

I am in the process of changing hairdressers because I moved. I won't see my new, highly recommended (from this site) stylist until another week and a half. This puts me a week or more past when I normally like to touch up my roots.

Is there a safe home alternative to touching up my roots between salon visits? I have rinses and crayons, but need something that lasts longer...at least a week.

Does anyone know about water-based colors, or perhaps even the drug store 'Loving Care' with no peroxide or ammonia?

Comments and suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Sincerely,
Cori

Hi Cori,

You want your hair to return to a "healthy" state, but you want to continue with "touch-up" coloring... I assume you want to maintain a color different from your natural color.

Deep condition with a reconstructor-type (protein) conditioner. Also, apply a couple of drops of jojoba oil to the palms of your hands, rub together, and work into your dry hair.

I know this doesn't directly answer your question, but I hope my response is of some help to you. Good luck and let us know how your upcoming salon visit goes.

Thanks Dave!

Yes, since I have about 80% grey (mostly where it shows on the top of my head!) I do need touch-ups regularly.

Funny, I had my first appt with a long hair specialist (found from this site), and she said my current brittle hair was suffering from a build up of too much protein! She asked me to stop using leave-in conditioners and prescribed a Pyto shampoo and Biogenol conditioner to get my hair back to where it should be.

I am on my way to healthy long hair!
