I'm thinking about growing my hair a bit longer than what it is

 

At the moment it's a bit like this:

 

 

 

 

The sides are shaved shorter and the back is shaved into a v shape. My problem is that I want to grow it like this

 

 

 

Now if I grow it like this will it require constant trimming over the next few months to even the length out or should it be possible to grow it straight away. I'm worried about growing it from this will it end up like a mullet?

I'm going to the salon next week to get the colour put in so that it's all blonde but would like to know if I need to get it cut. Any advice?
