My hair was a dyed dark-brown (for about 2 years).  Tonight I used L'Oreal Color Remover and as the package said, my hair turned bright red/orange.  It then said that I could dye my hair whatever color I wanted from that point.  I got a medium blonde color and my hair is now auburn.  It is really pretty and I'm not opposed to keeping it, however I really want to be blonde again.

How do I turn this auburn color into blonde?  Do I need to bleach it, and if so, what products do you recommend?

Also, could I put blonde highlights in my auburn hair?  (I prefer just making it blonde all over but am still curious)

The bleaching idea kind of scares me but I'm willing to do it at this point.  I just want to be blonde again :(  (my natural color is blonde)

To get to a true blonde you really do need to bleach. As long as you have it done professionally or follow the directions carefully you won't do too much damage to the hair. I would also recommend using a protein treatment after you bleach to help boost the strength of the hair up.

That being said, everyone's hair is different and what people can tolerate with their own hair varies. I go back and forth from a level 2 to bleach blonde and hate the in between. Sometime that means 4 bleachings in a week.

To have gone back to blond after the remover (some removers contain bleach already and I think you used one that did) you needed to use a blue based shade and a green based shade to take care of the red/orange tones that remained after the remover. You pick a shade of hair color based on what tones you want to remove, not on which tone you want in the final result. Most people don't know this and make the mistake of choosing a shade based on what they want for the final result.

If I were you (and I have been in exactly your situation) I would use Vanish (on Amazon) to remove the color (yes again). Bleaching can be tricky and there are a lot of tips and tricks to make it work. If you pm me, I'll give them to you. The timing is especially important in bleaching so that all of your hair comes out right at the same time. Although I've done bleach on myself and it turned out ok, I don't recommend it. You can just as easily remove the color and start over. You would need to use both a green based shade and a blue based shade to neutralize the red (green) and the orange(blue). Once these tones are neutralized, you will have a blond result. However, mass market color (the kits and Sally's stuff) will not be strong enough to do the necessary work on your hair. These cheaper formulas just can't do it. Only a salon line is strong enough. I recommend Wella Koleston Perfect color. It's available online now and it's one of the top selling salon brands in the world. It's made in Germany where the level system is different so it runs a level dark. Yes, it's a pain to have to order it (and not just run to the store) but if you want to do it right, Koleston is what will work. I've been using it for 4 years and recommending it all that time. My hair is super shiny and soft even though I use a very strong peroxide every 4 weeks. If you want more info on Koleston, you can pm me. Your situation is definitely fixable you just have to use the right products.
