Hey guys,
I have naturally light brown hair which is dyed dark dark brown (or soft black). I'm thinking of going in the totally opposite direction and doing light light platinum blond. I know this is a huge change, so I'm planning on growing my hair out a little (I have a pixie cut so growing the black out won't take quite as long) and then going to a salon to have it bleached/toned/etc. However, if at all possible I'd like to maintain it at home vs. going to the salon every 4-5 weeks. Is this advisable/possible?

Hi there:

Color maintenance can be encouraged through many ways.

1) The hair color your salon uses- Did you know that ammoniated color (color with ammonia) actually damages the hairs ability to keep color? The harsh chemical blasts open the cuticle of your hair, allowing the color molecules to penetrate, and changing the pH of your hair that is dyed for pretty much eternity. It is good to seek a professional hair color line that is absent of ammonia, and knows how to balance the hair's pH and close the cuticle. For example, Organic Color Systems is an ammonia-free hair color that maxmizes the use of organic ingredients and uses gentle heat to open the cuticle. The cuticle is then closed by their specific shampoo and conditioner that closes the cuticle back up, aka color has less of a chance of fading when it is locked in.

2) The at home products you use - Try to avoid shampoos and conditioners with SLS or Sodium Hydroxide. Dandruff shampoos (most) are very harsh and strip the hair. Also the sun and swimming changes the hair color, it's best to use UV protection and protect it from the pool. For example, sunflower is natural UV protectant and found in the best hair products (in my opinion).

3) Another way to keep blondes bright is to invest in some silver shampoo. While be careful, because this tends to eliminate brassyness and gold tones (which some desire).

Hoep this helps!

If your referring to maintaining your roots at home as they grow out and bleaching them yourself its a pain in the A**! Honestly, I have more clients with blonde hair then anything because thats what I do and I usually will NOT bleach my own roots. Not because i cant but because its a pain literally. It can be done and practice makes perfect but when (and i say WHEN because it will happen eventually doing it yourself). you overlap If your don't get the extra bleach wiped off ughhh breakage. Its easier to find someone who can do your roots for you a friend of stylist (preferred) Because based off of the natural virgin hair they can decide what toner and how long to leave the bleach on. People think being platinum blonde is so easy and for really light natural blonds it can be but it is high maintenance. I hope i don't prevent you from doing what you want be i'm being upfront and honest. Last after you bleach your hair and maintain the health (whats left lol) condition the crap out of your hair regularly.
Just want you to have the actual facts before you jump into something and realize oh crap this is a lot of work then do more damage by going darker again. =)
