One of the famous tourist places is the peaceful Wayanad hill station which is at a height of 700 to 2100 metres above the sea level. The route that goes up from Kozhikode to the Wayanad plateau gives the best views. The Wayanad Wildlife sanctuary is a part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve which was established for the conservation of the biological heritage of the region. In addition to that the Boy’s Town in Wayanad also has an herbal garden, a nature care centre and a sericulture unit which was established for the promotion of the Indo Danish project.
Another major attraction in Wayanad is the tomb of the great king, Veera Pazhassi Raja, who organized the Mapilla uprising against the British East India Company. Near it is the Pulpally cave, which was the hiding place of Pazhassi before he was captured by the British.
Pookat Lake at Wayanad is the natural fresh water lake which is also a famous tourist place. There is also a freshwater aquarium with a large variety of fish nearby. There are other facilities available such as a children’s park, shopping centre and boating.
Another attraction is the picturesque spot of the two Edakkal caves on Ambukutty Mala near Ambalavayal. Trekkers can go trekking to the Chembra Peak that is the highest peak in Wayanad.
