Hello all!

I have had micro link extensions in for about 4 months now, the first install was awful, I paid 1600 dollars and the links just kept coming out. I told my stylist that I wanted wavy hair because my real hair is wavy and I wanted it to blend in because we have some hot and humid summers in Baltimore, but NOOOO she talked me into poker straight hair that did not match the texture of my baby fine hair at all so I had to flat iron my real hair everyday and the second humidity hit my real hair would curl. I had to spend an HOUR a day smoothing it out, also there wasn't a week that went by where one wouldn't rip out even though I was SOOO gentle and using the right brush. When I first met with her I was in tears, I had been diagnosed with PCOS which started to thin my hair and I told her that I wanted her to put enough hair in the links so it wouldn't rip but she kept on insisting that she could only put 5 hairs for it to look real...

Finally I had enough and found another stylist to redo them and she was so blown away by how little hair was put into the link. I've had the new install for about a month and a half and (knock on wood) not one has fallen out. I went to make an appointment to finally have the wavy hair installed and she suddenly upped the price on me to an insane amount and I laughed and found a new women how is a 100 and hour, not 200.

The new women does links as well as tape extensions so now I am torn. I like the links but they don't lay flat and hurt my head when I lay down, they just feel hard on my head, I also noticed that they really show on the top and sides and don't seem to give me much volume. I was thinking about just trying tape all together but I don't know if it will be more visible since I tend to wear my hair back at the gym in a low pony tail. I am also afraid of the removal.
Anyone here prefer tape as opposed to links for fine hair?
I am really just looking for volume not length.

Hi Serene!

Wow. Just wow. It is sad to read this story.

I have naturally very fine hair, and for me, microrings were a disaster. Total freaking disaster.

That being said, maybe if they have been applied more carefully (not DIY) by a good stylist, it would have been better. I don't know.

All I know is that the rings wouldn't stay in, they would fall off on a regular basis (and I tried different kinds, silicone coated, non silicone coated), and the worst part was that they would rip off my hair in the process. That part really pissed me off.

Now tape. Tape is one of the absolute most gentle method out there. With a tape install, your extensions don't pull the same way as with microrings, it's kinda more 'distributed'.

If you want volume, boy you can get it with tape. LOTS and LOTS of volume.

In terms of time, it's a lot faster of a method.

You can do it yourself, they are a gazillion tutorials out there on tape method. So no need to worry about finding a stylist that will charge you insane amounts.

You will save a TON with that!

Or DIYextensions.net.

By going DIY (or maybe ask a friend to help if it's too intimidating the 1st time) you get to pick your own hair too, and you'll be putting in hair that can match your own.

As for the top row, I had the same issue as you when I did microrings. They used to show.

I find that tape or LG are a lot less visible for my top row.

I have developped my own little technique, which is a tape/LG combo, for my top row, and it works like a charm.

And I do have very fine hair too.

I'll try to link the turorial I did a while back.

I have very fine hair and the tape tends to feel like it's pulling my hair. I also can't get used to sleeping with them...always feels like something there is some friction. That being said, I have to say the micro-links are uncomfortable too. I have mine installed on a weft about 6 rows. The first week of trying to sleep on them is a nightmare....lots of pain med and benadryl to get me through the night. Fusion...no way...it was a nightmare to get them out of my hair. I am really comtemplating on going back to clip-ins, at least something I can take out of my head at night and perhaps get a good night's sleep. I posted earlier on the Halo Couture extensions and the one piece volumizers....hoping to get some feedback. I am really ready to give my scalp a rest after 5 years of permanently attached extensions.
