I have a weird face shape that doesn't seem to fit any of the classic patterns. It is widest at the cheekbones (6"), like a diamond. But my jaw line (5") is wider than my forehead (4" at widest and tapers to rapidly up), so that makes it seem like a pear. I have fine, thick, straight hair. Traditionally, permed hair with layers and bangs, done with hot rollers, has looked best on me. But I am trying to stay away from perms now. How do I find a good hair style since I can't tell what my face shape is?

it sounds to me like you do have a diamond face shape, its just a little altered... although a picture would help...Since your forhead is narrower then your jawline, to even it out you want to create width at the top of your head...The style that you explained that looks the best on you makes perfect sense. The reason that the perm in concert with hot rollers looks good on you is because of the volume it provides at the root, it gives you a balanced overall look. You want to emphsize your forehead more and minimize your jawline. So fullness in your hair at the bottom of your face is not reccomended-Its only going to make the bottom half of your face "heavy". Ask your stylist what she recommends, she should be able to customize a cut for you, and make sure she shows you how to style it as well.

Sallyo,
opposed to the perm, volume can be achieved with layering - more specifically slicing. The shorter strands near the root will create volume, especially in densely implanted fine hair. Your face shape may be a bit uncommon (in the guidebooks that is) but what is lacking in your description is the length (forehead/nose/chin area). They have an importance as big as the width. Anyway, based upon the width: you need volume on top, but not too much, just to make the "ideal" of the oval. Then bangs are only a possibility if your nose etc can take it. Otherwise it may not be ideal (shortens the area that needs to be enwidth! Is this English??? ). The cheeckbones may be optically reduced by choosing a style that goes towards the face. This could be done with a shorter style too, but could look better with a medium or long length (all depends on the measurements in the length of your face and your features eg the nose shape, the cheeck, jaws, etc.). Thus the length depends on your preference, the styling towards the face will look better with layers (hope you like them ).
Enjoy your hair and let it help you make the most of you (instead of the other way round).

thanks for your help. I was considering the slicing technique for getting volume and was going to ask my stylist aobut it; you have helped to confirm that I should look into that. My face length is 7". Generally I need bangs (and long ones) to hide the narrowness of my forehead and suggest an oval (rather than pear or interbed oval). I have a small nose, so that one at least is not a problem with bangs.Thanks.
