I had long dyed black hair which I've always colored before and never had a problem with it. Recently I tried to lighten the ends of my hair, trying to go with the "ombre" thing- but I used the wrong bleach so it fried my hair. I had to cut off 5+ inches.
Now the ends are still a little brown because I didn't cut it ALL off (it would have been too short) and my roots are coming in (brown) so my head is a mess.
I want to lighten the black of my hair to just go with a red but now I'm scared about bleaching it again. I understand black is a hard color to get rid of. I've had it for 10 years and always colored my hair with no problems but this last time has me a little scared.
If I do bleach it- Could I just put a gentle bleach on there for half of the time just to strip a little of the color out because it doesn't need to be very light for a dark red color.
Is there a bleach you'd recommend?

I'd say to go to a professional stylist! I would hate for you to have to cut off another 5" due to damage.

Oh thanks but I ended up doing it myself.
I put bleach on my hair for a short short short period of time just enough to get most of the black out and colored it red. Turned out PERFECT.

Oh good, I'm glad to hear it was a success!
