I just discovered this board...teehee! Its exciteing. bear with me!
I want to comment on a thread about militants. Whilst my hair was waist lenght or longer I have had MANY people come tell/ask me to donate it. I had a woman approch me at my job when I was working at the beach. Ive had several people approch me in the mall, walmart and other public places. Ive had coworkers suggest it. I avoid a certain mall during a certain donation drive each year. So if you have nice long hair you ARE going to be approched with donation causes. Why? becasue people care about cancer kids and rightly so.
I also want to comment about the laziness. Really long hair does not equal laziness. It takes a long time to dry even if its just air drying. Its harder to wash and keep clean and out of things. Its harder to style. If i wanted to curl my hair I would have to use more than one sponge curler for each strand. Its harder to braid and takes longer to style, braid, and brush.
Now a long style that is not super long is defiately easier, but hey, I hear more comments from short haired gals that thier own hair is so easy to manage. All they do is wash and go. Of course most longs dont deal with bed hair. But shorts dont deal with containing the hair. Its a trade off.
Okay, now my question:
What is concidered long? My hair is now a bit past mid back and I concider it short. Why? Well i just cut it from almost my knees...that to me was long! Its funny how my perception has changed. i dont see waist lenght as long anymore either...lol!
Anyways do you all still concider my little past mid back lenght long? (Im hoping so...)

Oh i added my pic...figured out how. This was taken over a year ago and my hair was put in boing boing curls so it looks shorter and wasnt grown as long as it was when I just cut it...

I'll say right away than anything longer than a human hand is long. Mid-back is fine. As for your decision to cut to "a little shorter, I hope you did it because you chose to and not due to this pressure.
This forum is a great hangout, it's not perfect, but for some of us, it's a digital home (or at least one of them :P)

Yes, Erinlynn. Your hair is long .
What do I consider long? I guess it's:
1. Relative to the length of hair the individual is used to wearing. Hence if you had knee-length, waist-length feels shorter than others perceive it to be.
2. Relative to the length of your body. A tall person with waist-length hair would have longer hair than a short person with waist-length. Possible by as much as 12 inches.
If I were to give an opinion on what I think to be long without considering the above points, I would say mid-back and beyond is long. Mid-back being between bra-strap and waist. It is a kinda fuzzy a measure though.
Best wishes.

Hey Erilynn,
This is probably showing my age but your comments about how much work hair can be make me think about when I was small; I used to watch the older girls roll their hair onto clean orange juice concentrate cans and fasten them down with large bobby pins. I don't remember anyone ironing her hair, but I'm sure they did that, too! Thankfully, blowdryers, curling irons (!), conditioners, better styling aids and changed attitudes toward hair appeared soon after, so I missed all that. Oh, and welcome to the board!

I cut it out of my own will for two reasons:
1. I couldnt wear it down without pulling it and sitting on it. Sitting on your hair isnt fun.
2. I want to have long hair whenever I get married. I dont expect to be asked in the next two years but by year three hopeful (been with same guy for quite some time and we are waiting on a better finacial situation etc.). If I cut my hair now it will have time to grow to my waist again and when I cut my hair sisnce its so rare I can have enough to cut off now to donate instead of just cutting it to my waist now and not haveing as long a pony tail. did that make sence?
At mid back my hair is still longer than most people I see around...but not freekishly long as it was before.

Hi Erinlynn, welcome to the Long Hair Support board!
Gee, I don't think of my knee-length hair as "freakish." (rhetorical question upcoming...) Why should it be seen as freakish? If anything is "freakish," it is the contempt that some people have for those of us who choose to allow our hair to grow very long. Seriously.

Freakish was actualy a word someone described my lenght as. However, I should rather have just said I dont like my hair being connected to particular religions. Especialy since I dont affiliate with any religion and I despise those that require you to dress or look certain ways.
i was just tired of people asking if i belong to this or that and if that was the reason my hair was so long.

Of course, it's always others who describe super-long hair as being freakish. I've heard it too.

These are opportunities to enlighten people that religion is not the only reason people might choose to wear their hair really long. A simple "no" to their question lets them know that the hair is not long for religious reasons. I would assume that people would think I wear my hair long because I like it that way (which is the truth, by the way), and not necessarily for any other reason.

Really it shouldnt be for any other way. that you want it that way should be the only reason.
Ive never seen a guy with hair longer than thier tail bone.

Ughg. The religion comment. I'd reply something sadly very offensive, maybe in the line of stfu-kthx-bye-ism ... seriously, desire is all you need.

Okay, back on the religion theme...
For me I had a second problem with my long long hair and people asking me if I belong to these religious groups (oh and once I was invited to thier religious group and told that "God gave women to man, God gave hair to women...our hair is our glory its our veil. Hair is made for women and woman is made for men". Oh yeah, all us women get is hair.
Anyways, back to my second problem. I like wearing flowing skirts and dresses. I would have made an excellent hippy in looks and spirit (except in the chemical department...etc.). But wearing long skirts and dresses also often goes with those religiopus groups. Especialy when people see me wearing them almost all the time (except at work).

I think anything past the shoulders would be considered long (maybe one inch past the shoulders?) I've always thought of shoulder length or just above shoulders being "medium", and chin or shorter being "short".
But I don't think the definitions matter much. These mean different things to different people, which is why I always specify inches when I'm going in for a trim (e.g, please only take off 1 inch!)
I even bring my ruler with me to show my stylist. Some people don't know what an inch looks like! I take no chances.

Take off an inch? No! Take off a mile! Will you cry? Only a while.
But in the end you'll see how happy things will be With out your hair With out a care and smiles all thanks to me!
Oh lovely locks come forth! Oh warrior Uzi fair! Are you afraid of my small blade Surely I’m not such a scare!
But you’re not afraid. For you’re a warrior brave! And you truly do care Fighting for all that is hair.
Still, long locks beware!

You threaten a mile? I’ll hack off your smile! Ponder it’s painful removal awhile…
No sadness will you create with your blade No treasured tresses succumb to your raid Uzi stands strong and with one mighty braid…
Sent into the dreams of hair-hating folk Wrapping round necks and tightening to choke One mighty braid with it’s iron-like grip And barbed wire bristles unlikely to slip
Shall turn dreams of snipping to nightmare and fear On hair-hating faces will terror appear Unweilding, the hair rope will banish all thought Of razors whereby hair torture is wrought
So bald toad, frog spawn…whatever you are I banish your cutters to the well of despair Where I bind you now to spend your days Without sunlight or starlight to brighten your stay
Thus speaks the Hand-maiden of Un-Cut Ends Defender of all her long-hair loving friends The protection of tumbling tresses I vow With black shining locks into battle I go!!!
