What do you put in your long hair to make it shine and look nice? As my hair is getting longer I'm looking for stuff to put in it to cut down on frizz, add a bit of weight (make the hairs stick together just a bit), and perhaps add some shine. I've been using Alberto Long Hair Balm and I like it a lot except that it has an excessively strong lavender fragrance and it tends to dry a bit more stiff that I'd like. I'm completely new to having long hair so I'd appreciate your ideas and advice. (I'm a guy if it makes any difference). (edited to fix a typo)

I swear on Palmshine from Body Shop. Itīs a leave-in conditioner that you can put on as much as you want and itīs best Iīve ever used!

Jojoba Oil is top notch. I use it once or twice a week and let is stew in my hair for at least a few hours before I wash it out. I often sleep with it in overnight. You'd expect it to make your pillow all nasty, but it really doesn't at all. Dunno why not. Anyway that's great. But if you get some, be sure to get 100% jojoba oil. Look on the ingredient list. The only thing there should be "Jojoba Oil." They usually sell it in the beauty care section of natural food stores. Itr's like $7 for a 2oz bottle, but that lasts me several months. Jojoba Oil also works great as a leave-in conditioner, as long as you only use a miniscule amount. No bigger than a pea. Smooth over your hands and touch it to hair.
For a regular old deep conditioner, I really like Origins Rich Rewards. It has a really strong apple/pear scent that will linger through the day, though. It is sold at Origins shops, found at many malls. Some department stores have Origins counters, too. I think it was like $16 for a tub? That'll last awhile too. I've had my tub for almost a year now, and I use the stuff 2 or 3 times a month. It's one drawback for me is that it comes in a tub as opposed to a bottle or tube. So it's kind of hard to handle. But worth it.

I agree with you SuperGrover 100% Jojoba oil is great stuff!
It's actually a liquid wax, which (from my understanding) is very similar to the sebum our bodies produce.... and helps explain why it works so well.

Thanks for the tips about Jojoba Oil. It took some doing but I finally tracked down pure Jojoba Oil. First, I had to get past the pronounciation issue. Then I had to get past the "what do you want it for" question (seriously). Sorry, but as a guy I'm still a little squeemish about buying "beauty products". I would have thought my need for it was obvious as I have so many dry hairs sticking up people are starting to wonder what is attacking my head! I'll try it as a "leave in" tomorrow and report back.

Sounds good, Gollan! Let us know how it works for you.
I wouldn't think of a jojoba oil purchase so much as a "beauty" purchase as a "health preservation" issue since it is also beneficial to dry skin.
How to answer the question "what do you want it for?" If you don't mind telling a fib, say, "for my wife." That should blunt such a stupid question. A retailer should never question (in such a tone!) why a customer wishes to purchase one of their products! Duh.

FWIW, I put some Jojoba oil on my hair earlier this evening. After a period of absorbtion the results are very promising. It gave a nice shine to my hair, exactly what I was trying to achieve. I'm still working on the frizz aspect.
I really appreciate the advice folks!

I didn't have a problem with my long hair being frizzy and unmanagable until today. The weather has finally gotten to it. I dabbed some http://www.bodytimeproducts.com/jojoilconfor1.html - Jojoba Conditioner in my hair, and now it's back to "normal."

papillon_purple,
Jojoba works very well for my hair. I have heard so many rave reviews for the Phyto products that I got some of their Phytojoba shampoo, which I will try tomorrow for the first time.

My initial impression of the Phytojoba shampoo is favorable. Will report more as the days-since-shampoo increase, and with increasing uses. Basically, after about 3 weeks I will have decided for certain how well I like a shampoo.
The shampoo I used about a month ago was the absolute worst shampoo I have ever used. It was terrible and its effects still have not been eliminated from my hair.
