I'm a guy currently trying to grow my long hair back after six years of short hair (it was down to my waste when I cut it all off). Since exercise is a good thing for blood flow to the follicles, and my exercise of choice is swimming, I'm wondering about the effects of the chlorinated water on my hair.

Anyone here with experience dealing with this?

Well, first things first. Is you hair a color that will change drasticaly with chlorine? My sister spent a summer with green hair instead of blond.

One thing to do to help save your hair before you swim: Get it fully soaking with fresh water first so the hair strands absorb that water and not the chlorine as much.

I dont know if osmosis later makes chlorine go into the fresh water but it seems to keep my hair healthier when i swim.

One thing to note: Chlorine does NOT turn blond hair green. It's the copper and other minerals in the water that does that (source: Paula Begoun.) However, chlorine can dry out hair, which is certainly not a good thing. Paula recommends using a silicone-based conditioner liberally before swimming and always shampooing thoroughly after. Use a chelating shampoo that contains sodium/tetrasodium EDTA high up on the ingredient list, as this ingredient detaches mineral deposits built up on hair.

Here's some info on swimming and hair:
