I was wondering if anyone has found an answer as to WHY hiar grows faster in summer and slower in winter - is it the heat? the light?
Do you think using full-spectrum light therapy (lamps used for treating seasonal affective disorder, jet lag, etc.) may encourage hair growth during winter months? Does anyone know of any resources on this topic?
Thanks, Heather

Hi Heather, welcome to the board!
My guess... speculation, really... is that the warmth (bodies are physiologically warmer in summer) means improved blood flow, including the capillaries that feed the hair follicles. Another physiological factor may be that peope are generally happier when the weather is warm and sunny, and this seasonally improved state of mind is better for our health, overall (including for those hair follicles).
I know offhand of no resources on the topic. Have you found anything from searching the web?

I'm with Dave on the heat = more blood supply thing. I think I read it somewhere, too.
It's the same as the way exercising makes your hair grow faster, because that's about blood supply, also.
It'd explain why most people can't grow their hair long in Wales because it peaks at about 10 C for 50 weeks of the year.

Enfys,
You just gotta generate your own heat then... exercise (whatever). Of course you did have a spell of warmer weather this summer, didn't you?
Erinlynn, I think the "Florida factor" has something to do with the lack of cold weather, too. Because it's almost always hot, we are all just accustomed to the heat, so it's no big deal. I lived "up north" for most of my life and while I like and prefer warm weather, when "heat waves" hit, it was hard to get accustomed to the heat.
Okay, enough rambling.

Actually that figures as to why I'm the only person whose hair grows faster in winter than summer!
