Is there an easy way to do this? I am trying to grow out my hair to all one length--and I know that trims are important for the health of hair. I tried a technique one of my friends suggested--gathering all your hair striaght abive your head and then making an even horizontal cut--she said that this would make the hair all one length. However, I tried this--and when I let my hair down, there seems to be layers--like the hair coming off the top of my head is not as long as the bottom now. SO for future reference--how can I do my own blunt cut trims without being a contortionist???

I'd say that the easiest way is to have someone you trust do it for you. The prodedure is simple, so they wouldn't have to be a trained stylist or anything.
There are also websites that give instuctions on self-trims. Try typing "trimming your own hair" into Yahoo or another search engine. The site I found was very intersting, but I can't remember what it was called.

Good luck

Thanks Monica - that was the site I was talking about, too. I haven't tried it but it looks easy enough, with good results.

Have fun with your hair Totcib!

I just trimmed using that method yesterday (slight U). You can see my before and after pictures here:

Would this work----parting the hair down the middle, gathering them in 2 ponytails on the sides and then grabbing the hair at a point down towards the chest and then cuttting each ponytail horizontally?

Wow. Your hair is very pretty, AmandaPanda!

Barbie, I don't think that method would work very well. You'd probably get variations of up to 2 or 3 inches in length. Put your hair in those 2 ponytails. Then take some dental floss and stretch it from the part line at your forehead back to the top of the ponytail holder... make a note of that point on the floss... (perhaps break it at that point). Then, let the floss hang down from the part line at the forehead. My guess is that the floss will be about 2 inches longer than the point at the top of the ponytail holder.

Anyway, Feye's method has received lots of praise from those who have tried it. Otherwise, find a trusted friend or family member to trim your hair, or a salon you know to be long-hair friendly (not just one that says it is when you call on the phone to ask).

Good luck.

The method from the link works and is real easy, that's how I trim mine usually, though I didn't see the site, it just seemd logical to do a ponytail, slide it down to where I wanted to cut and cut it there :)

Last time I took off about 5 inches though, it was pretty torn up and needed it.

I prefer to have my sister do it though, She's had waist or tailbone length hair for 20+ years, and her husband has had waist length hair for that long as well. Both are real foxfire types who would never go to a salon, I'm suprised they don't make all their own shampoo. Lot's of trimming experience there :) I never seem to get enough time to go visit them enough these days.

I use a technique of parting my hair all the way, then pulling it all together with an elastic under my chin, pulling head up and elastic down, and make the cut right off. Perhaps itīs not for perfectionists, but it suits me fine, my hair is almost waist length and never lies totaly flat down my back anyways.

I tried trimming the sides separately as they show on that website, but as Dave says, itīs hard to get it all one length.
