Getting curls permanently without a perm is impossible. Straight hair has a form that makes curls impossible. That'szwhy they use chemicals to change the shape of your hair (they open up and close chemical parts of your hair - by closing them again when it is on rollers, makes your hair keep that shape). Therefore, it damages your hair. Always has and always will, albeit the newer products are far less agressive than the first ones.
Making your hair thicker is very difficult too. I heard about a special treatment : kind of plastifying your hair - they put stuff on your hair and put you under a special lamp, but have not seen any results of that treatment.
What you could do, but it won't be much, is put very strong mousse on it, put it on rollers and dry. The curls will last for a few days (depending on the moisture in your environment: weather, sweating, etc). This means for the curls to stay longer, you'll have to repeat this a lot - which could end up damaging your hair too. Putting it on rollers without damaging it requires some practice.
Best of luck!
