Is it just me, or are the a certain few questions that are always asked when someone sees very long hair.
I'm always being asked to "turn around so I can have a look".
These are the common ones:
"Can you sit on it?" "Will you ever cut it?" "Is it knotty?" "Is it hard to wash?" "What about when you're old? That'll look scatty." "Doesn't it get on your nerves?" "Why don't you cut it? I'd look much nicer" "Have you ever had it cut?"
The last one really got me when my friends mum asked me that on Saturday. Her my friend (and her offspring) apparently had hair as long as mine when she was little, then cut it off and has kept it BSL ever since. Surely it's obvious that if her hair was as long and it's been cut countless times since, then my hair would have to have been cut. If not it would be about 8 foot long. Which it isn't.

Does anyone else suffer this, or is the Spanish inquisition reserved for me?
Sorry this is so long. It's been a very hard week with 3 pieces of cousework due in. I'm very tired. Please excuse me.

Hi enfys
I'm past the question stage, I get statements.... "You need to get your hair cut" ..."You'd look better with a smart hair style" etc.
That's because in the past, when asked questions like the last two you listed, I would return a very clear negative response that re-fired the question right back and left no doubt about how unwelcome those questions were. People now sneak in these snide statements and I continue the conversation totally ignoring the remarks . Maybe the message will finally get home one of these days.......
There are other statements and questions that are wonderful. Thankfully, the positive and complimentary feedback more then compensates for the other kind.
Hope life calms down for you soon, enfys.
All the best and don't let the nay-sayers knock off your smile.

Well, as a guy with hair past his chin now, all I've heard from friends who last saw me when I had a typical short tapered haircut is "you have long hair!"

"How long are you going to grow it?" "Is that your real color/wave?"
Uzma, I'd just like to apologize for all the socially retarded people in the world who somehow don't realize they're being rude. ("Oh, thank you! I was not aware of the advent of short hair until YOU brought it to my attention!") I think these people should be forced to live in a barn for a few weeks.

My "favorite" is always "What do you do with it when you go to the bathroom??" accompanied by a look of disgust. If people can't figure this out for themselves, then they deserve my usual answer as I go into a stall (accompanied by an absolutely incredulous look): "Uh, I let it hang in the bowl!! How else do you think I wash it??" (which actually answers *2* stupid questions )

How long is your hair cat girl?
I dont like the "how long are you going to grow it" question at all. I dont know why it seems so innocent but its like they really are testing you on something.
I have NEVER been asked if my hair color is real or if my wave is real (when I curl it complete strangers will always comment on how pretty it is but they never have asked. In my case its not real).
Personaly Ive wanted to ask a few people if their hair color was real as a compliment because some people seem to have amazing color and I wonder if they were born with it.

Oh yeah, as far as maintenance questions (how do you wash it, does it take long [no], does it take a long time to dry [yes very. air dryed], how do you keep it so nice looking! is it hard to brush?, how do you braid you hair (I can french braid and such just fine by myself)...etc).
I dont mind these questions because I like hair talk and Ive usualy gotten friendly talk from it.
I dont like the when will you cut it, how long will you let it grow questions. I guess i dont like the ones that imply the hair should be cut.

Denise, you and your hair are both gorgeous! Do you model, or were those just photos you took? And what color is your hair, since I can't see in the B&W pics.

I agree with Jenna =) And your cats are very pretty too. I miss having a cat...but my asthma and allergies simply wont allow it. That is unless i really want to have asthma attacks every day of my life and difficulty singing as a result too.
I have a question for you...hopefuly its not one that they always ask. Do you wear your hair down alot or do you put it up more often? I ask because my hair would end up being wore up more often than not.

Aw, thanks for the compliments, y'all! (the kitties thank you, too) Jenna, I "model" for painters & photographers, but I'm a bit short (5') to do much mainstream modeling . Erinlynn, I try to wear my hair up in a bun as much as possible, but I go through phases where I just want to wear it down a lot (like the past couple of months!). Cooler weather, with its static and sweater-wearing, forces me to wear it up, too. I wear it in a braid to sleep and while motorcycle-riding (I stick it down in the leg of a pair of tights worn on my head ). -Denise

Erinlynn, As for being allergic to cats, have you ever done research on the British Shorthairs? Their fur is not like most cats. A good friend of mine has one, and she is allergic to "normal" cat hair. He sheds so little to where you cannot tell, you can pet, pet, pet, pet and pet him and he doens't leave a huge hairball in your hand. Their fur is very dense, and they are beautiful!
We work at a vet clinic together, and she is the receptionist. Occasionally she goes in and helps the Dr. and if its a cat, she is sneezing, having a runny nose, etc when she is done. Its just something about their fur, AND they are gorgegous. Her's is blue, and full of spunk!

I havent thought of British shorthairs but Ive concidered the cornish and devon rexes. I think they are cut with thier curly short hair too! In Miami there is a cattery with all rexes that I think I might visit someday. They garentee you that if your allergic to cats youll have no problem to theirs and you can give th cat back if you are terribly allergic. i dont want to go buy one and then have to bring it back so I figure I cold go there and play with them a while to see my reaction.
Of course that is if I ever live in a place that allows cats and if my boyfriend likes it.

Denise, I consider that type of modeling much more interesting and real than the mainstream business. I'm actually considering being a figure or portrait model, because I'm an art student myself and I've taken a couple classes using live models. It seems very difficult to stay still so long, so I'm not sure I can handle it.

arrgorn, I'm not sure how much this is going to help, as your husband's hair is probably longer and a different texture than mine, but I do find that Infusium leave-in treatment does a great job of untangling my hair. Maybe try applying it liberally, and then brushing it out carefully, starting at the ends. Again, I'm not sure how tightly dreaded his hair is, so it may not work, but then again it might.
------------- Monica: Isn't there any way that you could look at this as flattering? I mean, she's doing this to be more like you. Rachel: Well, then, couldn't she have just copied my haircut?

I don't have a clue who Oster and Wahl are - suspect they make something to divest people of their hair?
Anyway, what's up with you guys taunting Dave like that?
If you're spoiling for a fight then I'm game and you've just waved the red flag.

Wow catt_grrl, you have extremely beautiful hair. I know if I met you in a store or on the street I would definitely ask you to turn around so I could see the whole view. I hope you would not be offended. Not to be condescending, but your hair is one of the most beautiful forms of natural art and really should be admired. If others stare, it is only to soak in such a rare expression of beauty. Looking at the way have have taken care of it, I can see you realize that it is a precious treasure worth the time and effort. It is lovely. JMHO.

enfys, I was wondering what kind of art you do, since I've heard you mention it sometimes. I'm an art student as well, but I'm going into graphic design as a career. I still take lots of fine arts classes, like figure and portrait drawing (ink, pastels, charcoal, pencil, paint, etc) whenever I can fit it in. I hope you do well as an artist!

Well, no one says you *have* to use any of these things . I eat healthily (& exercise) as well, but I can say that regular use of jojoba oil and taking certain hair vitamins (other supplements I take/rotate as part of an ongoing "experiment" ) has improved the condition of my hair a lot----it grows faster (& my nails grow like weeds--definitely didn't before), I get less breakage & fewer splits (requiring less frequent bottom trims), and shed hairs are replaced with tons of new growth. Let's just say it was more difficult to reach midthigh (the point at which I started taking supplements & using better products) than to grow from midthigh to lower calf .

I dont use suppliments either. Besides, from what I understand alot of foods have too many added nutrients etc and we really dont need to take vitamins on top of that if we are eating healthy. A bowl of ceareal can give you more than you need plus adding a vitamin!! Arggg! Anyways i just eat healthy and that is all.

I want to be a Graphic Designer, too, but would love to make it as a "real" artist, with exhibitions. I enjoy doing Pop Art pictures but try all sorts of media. I collect different types of paint, I think!
How much longer will it be before you qualify, Jenna? I have to finish this year in school, do two years in college, then a foundation year, and then a final three years in University. It's worth the wait though!
There's not too many fine art classes around here that aren't in school hours, so I do all my art at home.
I wish you all the luck in the world too Jenna

That's what I believe too, Erinlynn. I know it's dangerous to overdo it with some vitamins and minerals, so they start to do the opposite and do permanent damage e.g., too much calcium is bad for your teeth.
Besides, I think your photos have prooved that you can naturally grow very long hair that it also very beautiful.

Hi Enfys, I wish you luck on making it as an artist. I'm sure your work is very interesting since you seem quite creative. Perhaps you'll be famous someday! I'm not sure I have what it takes to make it as a fine artist, so I just take art every semester and think of it as a my hobby instead. I'm going to school in Amsterdam next year so I hope to find classes there and get a different cultural perspective. What a beautiful environment too, and a home to some of the greatest painters.
I'm going to be finished with school is 2 or 3 years, and I love school so I wouldn't mind staying longer. I'm really excited because the school I'm going to after Amsterdam has courses in Interior Design, graphic design, illustration, and fine arts. I won't have time for requirements.

I'm glad they worked so well for you! What supplements do you take? I eat very healthyfully too (except I'm a vegetarian so I'm not sure about protein), but I've heard vitamins can usually be helpful anyway.

Supplementing my diet with vitamins/minerals/herbs definitely helps improve my hair's fallout rate. Of course, so do other basic factors, such as base diet (reasonably good), exercise/health (modest amounts) and stress (sometimes high, but fairly well managed, I believe).
I always take a one-a-day multi vit/min, plus silica, plus either GNC UltraNourisHair or Nature's Plus. I also take Propecia (not recommended for women who are of child-bearing age).

enfys,
I don't take supplements for my hair, I think it's healthy because of all of the other things I try to do for it (avoiding heat styling, surfactants, and overshampooing, using good conditioners, drinking a lot of water, eating high vitamin foods).
I do take a multivitamin when I remember, which hasn't been often lately, however, we're going to try for a family soon, so I'm going to try to remember to take it from now on.
