There are many advantages of adopting a specific hairstyle rather than just letting hair fall where it may.
According to Wikipedia, a hairstyle, hairdo, or haircut refers to the styling of hair.
The fashioning of hair can be considered an aspect of personal grooming, fashion and cosmetics although practical, cultural, and popular considerations also influence some hairstyles.
Some of their advantages include, but are not limited to:
1. Establishing a unique identity. People are often referred to by their hairstyles including the style of the hair (straight, curled, wavy) and the length, (super short, short, medium, long, very long).
2. Building a strong self esteem. People who make a concerted daily effort to wear their hair in a specific style are making a special commitment to their hygiene and personal grooming style. Wearing a specific hairstyle can show attention to personal grooming, as mentioned in Wikipedia.
3. Expressing a religious belief. Dreadlocks and some types of African American hairstyles specifically are tied to traditional religious beliefs.
4. Getting attention. Many celebrities constantly change their hairstyles in order to get media or fan attention. Also, some celebrities will change their hairstyles to make them better suited for a desired part in a play, movie or TV program.
5. Sending a message. The Beatles sent a major worldwide message with their iconic moptop hairstyles. Justin Bieber did the same with his first hairstyles during his early phase of popularity. One Direction members also send messages to their fans as a result of the different hairstyles they adopt.
6. To be attractive to others. Certain hairstyles historically are considered more sexually attractive to certain segments of the population than other hairstyles. Women might grow their hair into a sexy long hairstyle to attract a partner and then change the hairstyle once they get married or form a commitment relationship.
7. As a disguise. People adopt hairstyles to disguise their true identity or to minimize facial features they may not wish to highlight. The famous combover hairstyle was often adopted by men and women wishing to disguise thinning hair textures.
8. As a form of rebellion. This is similar to sending a message but some people will push the envelop of their business or personal environments by changing their hairstyle to be rebellious.
