Do you think certain hairstyles are better designed to showcase Dip Dyed than others?

A good friend of mine has shoulder length brunette hair and she picked purple for her dip dye.  I told her that I don't think it shows up well.

Maybe if she had gone with a bolder, brighter color?  Or shorter hair?

Does dip dye only mean color at the ends? 

What do you all think?
