I am puzzled why my hair seems to shed an unusual amount every time I take a shower. I'd estimate about 15-20 hairs each time in between washing and gently combing afterwards. I want to know what I might be doing wrong. I don't color or bleach my hair, and the only "bad" thing I do is heat style (but it is still in really good condition since I'm careful). I eat very well, although I should exercise more. I have been diagnosed as moderaely depressed and I sometimes feel stressed out. Could any of these be the cause?

Hi Jenna,
It is normal to lose more hair when washing. The same thing happens to me. Even without tangling the hair, the process agitates the hair follicles and any that were close to falling out actually do so. I have also noticed that on the day or two immediately following my shampoo that my hair fallout is very low (confirmation of my just-stated theory).
So don't worry, your hair is quite alright.

Thanks for the reassurance, Dave. It's good to have you back and I hope you enjoyed your vacation in California. That's where I live, but I doubt you went to the Sacramento area.

I seem to have the same problem too. I've changed to washing my hair twice a week, and it seems that more hair has fallen out than before. Also, I used to have a lot of hair on my head, and it seems to have decreased a lot since I've started growing it long.

My theory would be that a certain amount of hair falls out no matter what, so if you wash less often then it will appear to be a greater amount of hair loss each time.

Hi Jenna,
Yep, I enjoyed my California vacation (and nope, didn't get to Sacramento).
My theory is that all other factors remaining the same, and given that more strands fall out during washing than on days when not, that the more frequently you wash your hair, the fewer strands will fall out with each washing. Conversely, the less often you wash, the more strands will fall out on wash day. But the total of strands lost is the same in each scenario.
I hope that made sense!
