I was invited yesterday to a formal thing: my husband is getting a prize (for a paper he wrote - I´m falling apart with pride!) and there will be a ceremony and formal dinner afterwards. Dress is a piece of cake - I worry not - but what do I do with my hair? It´s superstraight, 30 inches long and remnants of bangs are slightly below my collarbones. It would be nice to do something more adventurous than a bun or just wear it down.

Suggestions, anyone?

Hi Viktoria

Firstly, congratulations on your husbands achievements .

Have you considered an elegant braided style or an up/down style rather than a bun?

I saw a lovely part-braided style at a wedding I attended this summer.
The lady had finely braided the hair aound her hairline only and had either braided in or threaded in some gold thread.
Her hair was white-blonde and caught the light beautifully. (For dark hair one could use other complementary colours.)
All the hair was then secured high on the crown of her head, twisted a couple of times and secured again at her nape with a beautiful clasp.

I would encourage you to experiment and perhaps create something uniquely your own.
There are lots of ideas in the Hairstyle Galleries here at HB, too - accessible through the option bar at the top of this page.

Good luck !!!

Thank you, Uzma!

Well, the braid sounds lovely, but hard to do. I have been down town this afternoon and found some rhinestones that have velcro on the back, just stick it in the hair, and it should be all right. Tricky to get out, likely, but for one night...

I´m thinking now: bun and a couple of corkscrews hanging down from under it. But I guess I´ll have a few days to change my mind hundreds of times.

And thanks for the tip, I´ll go websearching!

Thank you for the tip, Laine! I´m certainly adding that website to my favourites. But those wonderful hairstyles seem to require help, and for this occasion, I don´t have it. Luckily, anyway, it´s not freezing cold, just windy and rainy...

I have learned one thing: I need to become more able to handle my hair, more versatile. And I need to find a stylist who can help me.
