Hello and Welcome!
As you are trying to achieve max length, I suggest you:
1. Get micro-trims done (less than half an inch) by someone you trust every couple of months (depends on whether your hair is damaged/split).
or
2. Get all the dyed bits cut off in one go (if it is long enough) and then let it grow without cutting, unless you want to maintain a neat edge, in which case go for suggestion 1.
The standard way to measure the length of your hair is from the hairline on your forehead to the tips of your longest hairs on your back (if that long).
See ya.

What Uzma says is good - I would add:
to achieve maximum length, you had better trim as little as possible. Therefore, I suggest that you grow out the dyed section as much as possible, until it starts getting ugly-looking, THEN trim.
Once you have cut off all the dyed hair, avoid trims as much as possible. Trim only if there are very serious split ends and then have as little as possible trimmed off. Best to go to a long hair salon, where you can trust the stylist not to chop off more than needed.
And if you can afford it, start taking viviscal/hairtopia vitamins to make your hair grow as fast as possible.
It's nice to see that someone is going away from the common way of treating one's hair (chemically processing it for an artificially created look) and back to their natural roots. I appreciate this.

Thank you! I'm sure you get these questions all the time and I really appreciate the wisdom you guys share on these boards.
As for the natural look I really think that is the most beautiful way to wear long hair. I eventually want my to look like it came out of a preraphialite painting.

Hello Lalaithial, and welcome! It's great to hear you've been enjoying our community and learning from us; even better that you've spoken up.
I agree with Uzma's perspective on trims. Micro-trims can even be 1/4 of an inch or less, depending on the skill of the stylist (now there's a challenge, stylists). I might add: learn to "dust" your hair. This is the term for searching through your hair (generally at and near the ends) for split-ends, and use a pair of sharp scissors to trim off the split-end from the single strand on which it exists. Repeat until you can't find any more split ends or until you run out of time, whichever comes first. Depending on the health of your hair, this might take almost no time or it could take awhile; regardless, your hair will be in improved condition when splits are zapped.
Hope this helps!

If there isn't a long hair salon nearby, make sure to ask your local salons if they have a stylist that specializes in long hair. Make a consultation appointment first before actually getting your hair cut/trimmed.
