Hello dearest HB friends! I've been MIA for awhile but I thought I'd let you know that for the first time in three years I will be visiting a salon for a hair cut. Now, I've been growing my hair out for many, many months now (several inches below the shoulders currently and nearing my desired BSL.) Actually it's about the length of my hair in the icon to the left. I trimmed my own hair before that.

Unfortunately, my ends look awful, and being an incurable perfectionist I can't stand them looking like they went through the office paper shredder. So I shall be getting a one-inch trim. Hate to lose the length but I'd rather have it be neat.

Anyway, it's been so long since my last salon visit that I had to search for a good one. I met a girl working at a local mall with the most artfully done highlights I'd seen in a great while. She told me this place only charges $25 for highlights and cut and does fantastic work. Which is true, judging by the result. So I made my appointment with the owner for early February, as I'm not quite ready for the salon experience yet. That and I'm a master procrastinator.

One thing I want to ask the stylist: I would like to have the back of my hair cut fairly straight across. Currently it is all one length but falls in a U-shape down my back. Sophie, Lilibeach....anyone else know a technical term for this so I can sound educated and cool?

I hope 2004 has been a glorious year for all of you thus far.

If you want it cut straight across that would be a blunt cut , as far as I know. :)

Lyris - Bonne Chance Mademoiselle! I know your fear. I had an appointment in December and i was really nervous the whole week before. All went well as I think I scared the stylist into paralysis. She trimmed the minimum and manages to coax out the Courtney cox layers I had been waiting to grow my hair long enough for.

I think what you want to do is give her is a benchmark length(pick a strand that is the length you want her to use as the base) and then ask her to take that length all the way across. It is a blunt cut.....but specify the length since blunt cut has many lengths to it.
Sophie? lIlibeach? Toni?

Getting rig of the U shape... I personally like that... in fact the "U-ier" the better IMO. A girl at my gym had a blunt cut WELL below bra strap length and got a U shape in the back... the next week she got highlights and changed the U to V that mirrors the shape her back makes as it falls to her waste...HOT!

Good to have yoo back!

Hi everyone! Thank you for your responses. It's good to be back. I've been pretty busy the last couple months and have gone through some...let's say "intriguing" personal situations but not to worry---all is well. I was shocked the day I logged in to find HairTalk GONE, but I am happy, as I'm sure you are, to find it's back and at it again. I hope everyone is enjoying this fine Wednesday. Here in Michigan it is so cold and snowy that I couldn't feel my face on the way into work. Who needs nerve endings anyway?

I'd brave your bitter Michigan weather if I could get highlights for $25! ;)

I hope this isn't an indelicate question, but I really am in the the dark: Can anyone tell me why Hair Boutique was shut down? I read Karen's message, but what was the abusive conduct that led to it? Her message seemed to assume that we all knew what she talking about.

I was pretty stunned, because I wasn't aware of problems, especially on this forum.

Hey Ally - I can't haelp you there either, I am in the dark too. I logged in a day or two after the boards came back and asked what happened. My inquiry was removed....

Your /inquiry/ was removed? That doesn't give me warm fuzzies. What's up with that?

Hi Ally, and everyone,

The boards were disabled for several days after a particularly vicious and unwarranted verbal assault was directed toward a certain upstanding member of this long hair community, who has since (sadly) chosen to not participate here any longer. I see that Hal has posted within this thread -- Hal, you wouldn't happen to know anything about this, would you?

Karen decided to delete two of the boards ("Just Chillin" and "Philosophize"), where the attacks occurred. So anything that anybody posted there was removed for good.

Karen also instituted some other changes which will hopefully make a recurrence of the unpleasant scenario less likely. These activites were done in an attempt to help ensure that the HairBoutique's message boards are a friendly and pleasant place to visit and exchange thoughts, ideas, and helpful advise.

Jacqui, I'm happy to hear that your trim last month was a success. And Lyris, I wish you the best in your upcoming salon visit. Personally I wouldn't worry about seeming "educated and cool," I would rather just get the service I want. But that's a somewhat-older-than-you-are man talking.

Hi Dave--thanks for enlightening all of us on the recent HB incident. Let's hope we can keep things even keel in the future and continue our hair ramblings as peacefully as possible.

Well, I just couldn't stand the ratty ends any longer, so I moved my salon visit up and got three inches taken off. Of course, this has set me back a good six months from my length goal (now I'm looking at this fall) but I absolutely hated the frayed ends.

Here are before and after photos. (Note: these may not work today, as sometimes the server tells me I've exceeded my daily data transfer limit, even when I clearly have not. Oh well, it's a free service.) Try tomorrow if you can't see them.

Before (the damaged ends aren't evident in this photo, but believe me, they're there)

And after!

Hi Lyris! I'm so glad things went well for you at the salon. I tried to view your before and after shots, but got some message about exceeding the daily usage limit. I guess I'll try again tomorrow.

Take care!
Becky

I know quite a bit about that situation but unlike you I chose to respond to the two people who ask about it by bmail as to not farther stir the pot, so to speak. Dave would you like me to send all my post to you so you can approve them or can I not post I your domain at all? Are you sure that upstanding person "chose" to no longer participate?

Sorry everyone---it looks like the image hosting service is now permanently demented. My apologies--does anyone know of a free service that actually works?

Dave, I sent you the pix!

Am I the first person to see these, then? Cool

The cut looks nice and blunt, and very even. Well done, it looks like you picked the right place to go to! It is a shame you had to lose the length, but the end result will be worth it. Will you be going back to the salon for trims as you grow, or is this it now until you reach your goal?

Lyris, you look like a doll! You have beautiful complexion and your hair, so silky looking! I had a haircut too, last Wednesday... long layers. I had 2 inches cut off on the back. I had to do it, my hair was so damaged on the ends, split ends plus it took forever to dry. I love how my hair looks now though!

Have you tried Redken Smooth Down? I am using that now. I like it just as much as the All Soft. Smells nice also.

Seems we have quite a few living dolls here. What else would I expect when we're surrounded by women with long gorgeous hair.

Lyris, I, too, am battling the winter elements in Michigan. I'm south of Detroit. You?

Beautiful, Lyris! I prefer a more blunt cut as well, so I'm actually off to the salon today to get some of the under layers taken off. Some people look really nice with layers, but for me I think my hair appears thicker and healthier at one length.

Hi ladies and gents. Glad you are enjoying a trim now and then as am I. I love the feel of blunt, even ends brushing my back. Unfortunately they don't brush nearly as far down now, but alas!

Gord, I'm in Southwest Michigan and we have had just awful weather. My good friend was nearly killed last night on I-94 near Benton Harbor when he hit a patch of black ice, spun three times and went in a ditch. I hope everyone has the sense to slow down when the next installment of winter hell hits.

Good luck at the salon Jenna! Don't you love the way salons smell? I feel sexy the moment I walk in. :-)

Scrolling through the responses and seeing the signature pics, I have to agree with Gord. Beautiful hair y'all have, too!
