My hair is pretty long, it''s angled, but the longest part hits the top of my pants. Anyways, I''m thinking about getting a sprial perm; as of now i wear it blow dryed straight 99% of the time, and occassionally braid it at night and take it out in the AM. My question is...if i get a spiral, will i ever be able to straighten my hair? or do i have to wait until it grows out? Also if straightening is out of the question, how long will the perm stay in my hair?

If you really want a perm, its going to take a lot of work. My friend who had really long hair, it took two perms to actually get it the way she wanted. It looked great, but was very VERY high maintence. Once she got it straightened, it looked like crap.
I've occasionally thought about getting my hair permed, but the woman who cuts my hair won't do it. (I'm glad now, I like my straight hair)
Something that I read off of a wonderful long hair site ( http://www.wuvie.net/STRESSLESS_tresses.htm - http://www.wuvie.net/STRESSLESS_tresses.htm ) is to put your wet hair up into several braids (not too tight though, it needs to dry by the AM). Instead of putting pony tail holders, use perm rods with the papers (I use tissue) and roll the ends up. Leave it in over night. This way you have the semi-curls from the braids and your ends look nice.
Its not a perm, but will leave you with curly hair.

I second what Laine said, perms are among my hair pet peeves. They use harsh chemicals that have been known to malfunction and fry hair, even making it fall out. If you straighten after, who knows how it will look. It's one of the stupidest inventions for "beauty", to be quite mundane. If you don't like it or if you damage your hair, think how long it'll take to grow out. And if you do like it, think of how much you're going to have to come back for perms again and again. If you want curls, just invest in rollers. That's my 2 cents anyway.

You also get "roots" froma perm the same way you do from color. When the roots are straight and the midshaft to ends are curly, it can look really obvious and cheesy. It took me years to grow mine out on medium-length hair.
Another risk is that the curls won't take on hair as long as yours (happens a lot), but you'll still have the damage from the chemicals.

I have. 3 times. It isn't worth it, IMO.
The curl never holds well.
Perms are very damaging. I permed 2½ years ago and my hair is still damaged in places.
Don't let this happen to you:
You get a perm, then decide you don't like it, so you straighten it, chemically (So,now your hair is even more damaged). It still doesn't look good after straightening, so now you wish you never messed with your hair in the first place.
When you asked if you would ever be able to straighten it, did you mean chemically? If you mean with an iron, blow-fryer, etc.- that will remove most of the curl permanently.
You will also need to watch out for certain ingredients/products if you perm since they could reverse it.
In a nutshell: Don't force your hair to be something it isn't.
I've read about so many people who got their hair thermally reconditioned/permed and then decided they wanted to go back to their hair's natural state.
The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.

I fully agree with AmandaPanda. Don't perm your long hair. As soon you've done it, you will be disappointed. It's very damaging for your hair. Of course I want sometimes curls as well. I put my wet hair up into braids roll them up and leave them for 12 hours. Nice curls for 1 day are the result. Afterwards however I always again prefer my long straight hair.
