Hey all!!

AS I was doing my 'research' on growing long hair I ran into this article on TILHC website that 'bangs/layers' can slowdown the hair growth 'cause our body gives more nutrients to the shorter hair because it tries to balance itself out w/ the longer hair?? IS this tRUE? HEre is the link to the info I found:

http://longhair.org/bangs.htm - http://longhair.org/bangs.htm

I just have layers around my face (chin length) to add some spice to my hairstlye.. not really bangs.. but I REALLY want my hair in the back to grow fast but will the layers around my face (on sides) make this growth slower?? Please let me know!

ThanKS!!!
I LOVE this forum! :)

I'm no expert but I'm thinking hair has no way of reporting back to the head how long it is?

Some people think this is true, but for the most part it's believed to be a myth. Hair isn't alive so it really has no way to be aware of how long its ends are.

I think its a myth. But why dont you do some scientific testing of your own. Measure a few long strands for a couple months and measure some of your layers and your bangs during these same months. See if they are growing faster.

To make this test even better find a friend who has no layers and measure her hair from the same general spots on her head as your measurements are taken. Its possible that bang area hairs just grow faster overall so you need a control gal with non layered hair to rule out the layers as being the factor.

Boy, who here can tell Im a scientist?...and not a speller.

What Jenna and Hal said. I think this bunch of hooey may have been extrapolated from the misconception that shaving hair makes it grow back thicker, when in fact it's just all growing at once (since the existing hair is now growing out at the same time as hair that fell out naturally).

IMO, it's not true. Old hair falls out and new hair grows in. Not every hair on your head is the exact same length.

After looking around that site I think the statement was made to promote the aurthers perfered hair style.

Dr. George Micheal believes this theory too, they probably got the idea from him. I think he was one who thought of it first.

Some people notice their hair might thin out or their growth may become slower with bangs.

It's not true for me. I have short bangs, and I get the average growth of ½" every month, sometimes more. When I tried growing out my bangs, I got the same amount of growth each month which was ½" (I think it might have slowed then, too).

I really think they are just trying to get women to look the way they want them to.

Thanks all for your reply.. This makes me feel much better!! I am just surpised that the website would come up w/ something like that because I mean like everyone says Hair is DEAD(Sadly but true)!! Our body/mind doesn't know how long each strand is (as the other website claims!!) It just seemed somewhat odd while I was reading it and just wanted to make sure w/ your hair gurus that my intuition was correct :)

Thanks again for all your responses! :)

I never really believed that either. I'd be more inclined to believe the theories about stimulating the scalp to make hair grow. I'm sure that if this theory were true that when the hair is cut shorter it might be less heavy than the rest and perhaps it wouldn't pull on the follicle as much but I don't think this would cause a long term problem. Your scalp might be in shock for a few minutes but I don't think it would shut down the growth. Its kinda like if someone blows on the back of your neck and you get that feeling that the hairs are standing up.

Frankly as far as I'm concerned whether this is true or not you shouldn't have to live your life or choose your hairstyle based on it. If you like your hair with bangs and or layers then you should get them because why have the hair you don't want just for the sake of having it grow? If you don't do the things you like then when its gets longer you'll just want a change anyway. The same goes for that Age thing. It doesn't matter if 1000 people don't like the way you look, if you can't look at yourself in the mirror because you try to please someone else you won't be happy.

I found this very interesting because I, too, let my bangs grow out last summer and it seems as if they just zoomed in growth compared to the rest of my hair. I got about 3 inches trimmed off in May to even out growth and damage from curling irons and coloring. It's never been very shiny, but I am still trying to figure out how the hairdressers in Mexico get it so shiny when I am there - and no curling irons! I am trying to get it to waist length all around, but I noticed that many of my favorite singers have their hair shorter in front and longer in the back, and it actually looks very nice. What else slows down hair growth? Does age do it, too?

I think it's a mater of perception. Maybe it just seems that the bangs are growing faster because when it does grow, it's more obvious than the longer hair growing more.

I'm still growing out some of my layers, but it doesn't seem that the shorter layers are growing faster than the longer ones.
