My hair: Curly, just below shoulder lenght and very frizzy. Cut in long layers, shortest layer is chin level. My hair grows about 1 1/2" in 3-4 months. That's very very very slow. I have recently started a new way of eating which is of course much healthier. I am looking to start on a multivitamin as well. Still trying to figure out what exactly I need on a daily basis...so many contradicting reports on what a woman daily intake should be.
In any case, if you had to give me a basic list of what kind of food I should have a higher intake of and what vitamins and/or supplements to take to help my hair grow. Cleaning out my desk at work I found a brand new bottle of GNC NourishHair which I never opened since I purchased it and still has 2 years to go. So I am considering taking that as well. Unfortunately my pocket cannot afford most of the products that some posters rave about here. Thanks to all. I love this board . I rarely post although I read quite often whenever my boss isn't looking.

Two words....Brewers Yeast. You can take it in powder form (mix with water or juice...it tastes terrible!) or in tablet form (much easier). This stuff is amazing for hair growth and health and inexpensive as well. I couple it with a folic acid supplement. Please research Brewers Yeast and I know you will be convinced. I have been taking it for months now and my hair growth and texture have improved dramatically! You will love your results I am sure. Good luck!

I have been growing my hair now for quite a few years! And I never took into consideration what my diet was like or taking suppliments. All I used was patience! My hair is about 2 inches below my bra strap but I had it cut about a month ago. I hadn't had it cut for a year! So it really needed it! They cut about 4 inches off! So my advice is to get it trimmed about 3 times a year and use treaments or masks! Hope this helps! P.S. I used to have very short hair!

Protein, protein, protein. Although this doesn't mean you have to follow the atkins diet or anything. Mixed nuts and soy have plenty of protein.
Extra biotin also helps. It comes in very small amounts in a multi-vitamin, though.

I suggest you eat natural proteins (seafood, eggs etc) and wholefoods (grains, nuts, etc) as well as plenty of fresh fruit and veggies.
I took a hair vitamin for a long time and then gave it up only to find that there was no change in my hair condition or growth rate.
Just my 2 cents.

1) give it the time
2) DON'T trim if it doesn't really start splitting. Some people have better hair than others. Try to find a long hair salon where they will be less likely to chop off a lot of hair if you do need a trim.
3) Try Viviscal/Hairtopia. For some people, the vitamins seem to work well.
4) Try to lead a healthy life. Hope you don't smoke but if you do, now might be a good time to quit?
5) Your hair will likely be in a better condition and split less if you don't dye/bleach it and avoid other chemicals and (if you can) blowdrying
6) Another piece of advice to avoid the "necessity" of trims: dust your hair yourself, regularly checking for split ends and trimming them off yourself (or by a friend.

Rule #1 is definitely DON'T TRIM. If you find that your ends are becoming damaged/split, have a very small amount trimmed--an eighth to a quarter of an inch--by someone whom you trust implicitly to stick within these limits, or do it yourself.
You would be surprised at how much hair you can grow by staying out of the salon/barbershop for a year!
To enable you to follow rule #1, keep your hair in top condition: avoid any kind of heat (blow dryers), chemical processing, harsh surfactants in shampoos (like ammonium and sodium lauryl sulfates) and overwashing. Use good conditioners. Wear hats or other protection in extreme cold and the sun.
