Help! I need neat and pretty hair restraints. I have thick long straight hair that I keep at waist length, and I'm very long waisted...but I'm 39. Old enough to want to appear my age without long hair hanging every where. You know, PTA, and business meetings. Stuff like that. I need to hear about some sort of hardware that will hold heavy hair in a bun, or other elegant style besides a braid. I've tried french twists, pony tails, braided buns, piling it up and jabbing it with a million pins, and scrunchies. My hair is too heavy. It slips, slides, and falls askew. I end up looking like I've been pulled through a bush backwards. Any Ideas?

Hi Nancy,I have a hard time keeping my long hair up for any length of time also. The best thing that works for me are hair sticks or chop sticks. I can put them in and my hair will stay however I put it for as long as I want it to. They also come nicely decorated or very plain for whatever mood I am in.Take Care, Noreen> Help! As Cher said, welcome old timer! And I would have to wholeheartedly second Noreens excellent advice regarding hair restraint and vote for hair sticks. I have super straight fine hair that will NOT hold a barrette, comb, clip, etc., etc. and it can be very frustrating when I need a more sophisticated look than my usual loose braid. I've lately been taking my hair off to the side and starting to twist till I get near the bottom, then I slip my finger around that twist about halfway down and twist the twist up too. I pull that up in back of my head so that the loop where my finger was wrapped is at the top and insert a hairstick into that loop then just push it down through the hair against your head and a couple of the twists and there you have it, simple, tight, stays all day if you do it right. I even go swimming with this configuration and it will stay put. Takes some practice and you have to get a good firm wrap, but its a dream for really hot days. Noreen and I are probably good representations of both extremes of hair, hers super, super full and lush, mine a bit, well, not very thick shall we say, so if hair sticks work well for both of us I bet they'll be great for you too!Good luck!Best wishes to everyone!Dawn

Hi,A picture is worth a thousand words. I LOVE hair sticks and they hold my "fat" hair all day.Check out the photo of my favorite hair sticks. They have little zuni bears on them.I also use a big fat "claw clip" sometimes which I bought at Sally Beauty. It was $4.95 and it is wonderful for keeping my hair in a bun. I still prefer the chopsticks though.Karen>> As Cher said, welcome old timer!> And I would have to wholeheartedly second> Noreens excellent advice regarding hair restraint> and vote for hair sticks. Well I found blank ones in a beadshop recently. They had several colors of wood, nicely finished with a hole in the top to secure whatever decorations you want. I think they were about 7 or 8 dollars... way cheaper than the 20 or 30 they run when fully decorated!-jennifer j
They're right. Hair sticks are good. I just started using my culinary small bamboo sticks because they're the only ones I have. And with almost no practice the whole shebang is secure. My hair is of the heavy/slick persuasion and I gave up and got used to a heavy braid on my neck/back for the past 7 or so years because I had no other useful solutions. UNTIL HAIRSTICKS. Yipee!> Help! I need neat and pretty hair restraints.> I have thick long straight hair that I keep at> waist length, and I'm very long waisted...but> I'm 39.
