I have experienced hair loss due to child birth twice. The first time was when my son was born. About eighteen months after I gave birth to him, I started loosing my hair and it didn't stop till he was four. The second time was when I gave birth to my daughter. It started when she was about six months old and it continues to fall out though it has slowed down somewhat. Before my daughter was born and while I was pregnant with her, my hair was past the middle of my back, almost down to my waist. I had to have it cut short because it fell out so much that it looked real thin on the ends. I bought Nioxin and noticed some improvement and I do take dietary supplements. Can anyone give me any advice as to how to grow it out faster and what could be causing my hair to fall out that long? Thanks for any replies.
Dear Karen,Hi there! First of all, it is ironic that you posted this today since I was talking with my Chemistry professor about the exact same topic earlier. She is pregnant now and is due in may. She said that after her first child, she experinced severe hair loss (she said it was falling out in clumps). We attributed that to the drastic fluctuation of hormones both before and following birth. Anyway, all of her hair is back and it is thick too, so I guess this is actually a common problem-- although I would venture to say that you should really check it all out with you OBGYN. Also, if you have read down the board a ways, you can see that there is a recent rage of Viviscal. I myself, have just bought my first pack. You should read Regina's article on the topic-- it sounds really promissing! Best Wishes!Sherry> I have experienced hair loss due to child birth twice.> The first time was when my son was born. >Hi, Karen!I think you should definitely be concerned. Although I have never been pregnant, I know women who have experienced some hair loss after pregnancy. However, yours is the worst case which I have ever heard of. It is a bit out of the ordinary because your hair started to shed and fall out so long after you gave birth and continued. To add to what Sherry said, I had been under the impression that the hair loss was not due to a simple hormone imbalance, but rather the hormonal process during pregnancy shuts off the normal shedding process which your hair undergoes. So, when you are no longer pregnant, you are simply back to the status quo.I have known ladies whose hair, skin and nails were literally transformed during pregnancy and continued fairly much after birth. Similarly, I have seen some whose hair, skin and nails never really recovered. On average, however, hair loss is moderate and within 6 months to a year, you should recognize your hair again.Have you noticed any substantial changes in your skin? This is important because you may be experiencing early signs of menopause. Also, have you added any new dietary supplements? This, too, can throw off your system.I think the best thing you can do is to speak with a medical professional, an OBGYN or internist. I don't know whether you have discussed the problem with the physician who delivered your children, but, if you have and he or she has not told you to be concerned, please check into finding another. All the best,Jade21I have experienced hair loss due to child birth twice.> The first time was when my son was born.
