Please explain the difference between Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and Sodium Laureth Sulfate. Are they both drying for the hair? If a product has Sodium Laureth Sulfate in it is it better for your hair? Or is it best to make sure neither of those ingredients are in the shampoo?

Hi there!I can not actaully tell you the chemical difference between Sodium Lauryl and Sodium Laureth, HOWEVER, I have read enough literature to tell you to STAY AWAY from Sodium LAURYL sulfate. It is a very drying, stripping detergent. However, Sodium LAURETH is the most gentle detergent that you can find and any Ammonium based products fall in between. For more info on Hair Ingred. I suggest that you look at the site ALL ABOUT HAIR-- it is very informative. In addition, you may want to check out Paula Begoun's book, "Don't Go SHopping for HairCare Products without Me). In addition, if you look at your best salon brands, most use Sodium Laureth Sulfate and in a small number of cases, Ammonium based detergents.Sherry> Please explain the difference between Sodium Lauryl> Sulfate and Sodium Laureth Sulfate. The shampoo has the Sodium Laureth in it. All of the NG products are herbal, smell great, leave my hair clean and shiny and are not tested on animals. If you have these products in your area, give them a try, they worked amazingly wonderful for me.

Hi Juna!Sherry below is right about where to find some great information on product ingredients and their effects to your hair. One note of caution on catagorizing an ingredient as bad for your hair:Yes, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is, by itself can be drying to the hair. However, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is rarely the only ingredient in a shampoo. The reason a few manufacturers must use this cleansing ingredient is so that you can benefit from other great ingredients in the shampoo that would otherwise cause your hair to go limp. For example, if a shampoo contains aloe vera, an essential oil or say, cone flower extract all of which are very beneficial to hair, they would weigh fine hair down if a mild clensing agent was used. So look for a balance - They even have bleach now that will not fade your brightest colored clothes, but cleans better than most mild clothing detergents. Also keep and eye out for blanket statement as there is always an exception to any rule and such is "Murphy's Law". :)In your service,Mickhael> Please explain the difference between Sodium Lauryl> Sulfate and Sodium Laureth Sulfate. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate(SLS)--Harsh detergents and wetting agents used in garage floor cleaners, engine degreasers, and auto cleaning products. It is well known in the scientific community as a skin irritant. It is rapidly absorbed and retained in the eyes, brain, heart, and liver, which may result in long term effects. SLS could retard healing, cause cataracts in adults, and keep children's eyes from developing properly.Sodium Laureth Sulfate(SLES)--SLES is the alcohol form(ethoxylated)of SLS. It is slightly less irritating than SLS, but may cause more drying. Both SLS and SLES may cause potentially carcinogenic formations of nitrates and dioxins to form in shampoos and cleansers by reacting with other product ingredients. Large amounts of nitrates may enter the blood system from just one shampooing. My advice is to stay away from both of them, along with propylene glycol. I use Aubrey Organics shampoos and conditioners, which are all natural and do not test on animals. You might want to try them.
