I use to have shoulder lenght hair and would condition accordingly, but when I cut it to about 3/4 of an inch I was told by friends I no longer need to condition it. I figured that is would be a more reliable source for information and appreciate any suggestions.

I think you should condition your hair a couple times a week if you have short hair or hot oil it whenever it is feeling too dry. More than that may cause build up.
