QuoteReplyTopic: monthly trims = long /beautiful hair??? Posted: September 28 2002 at 3:31pm
When I started to let my hair grow long my hair was 15 inches. That is 8 years ago now and my hair is now 41 inches long. Especially in the beginning I got a few good trims every 6 months and just let it grow. I would not advise to have a monthly trim but a regulary short trim every 3/4 months. Sometimes I put my hair up and I keep it in a braid when I sleep. I`ll be interseted in the replies to this one.

My hair is now 42 inches from hairline to end. Lately, I`ve been trimming it once every six months. For about three years, I didn`t trim it at all. I think the regular trims are a good idea if you`re starting with badly damaged hair and don`t want to cut it all off to start fresh, but if your hair is in good shape, you can definitely get it trimmed less often. (I wash my hair about twice a week, I use no styling aids, I keep it in a braid most of the time, and I put apricot kernel oil in it after I swim.)
My hair is 22 inches long and I get it trimed every four months. My hair grows about 1/2" a month. I wash my hair every other day. It actually does better the 2nd day. I let it air dry and the only thing that goes in my hair is Shampoo and Conditioner, either Panteen ProV or Neutrogena (and my husbands fingers :) I was also told that when you wash your hair to use warm-to-hot water to wet your hair, that way the pores on your scalp open up. Then shampoo and condition (I always massage the conditioner into my scalp and leave it in for 3 - 5 min.) then rinse with cool-to-cold water, to close the pores. I try not to put my hair up too much, I heard that by putting it up in a ponytail weakens the hair. I do put it up at bed-time, in a loose braid or ponytail. I also heard that brushing too much is not good. I usually brush about 4-5 times a day.

Seriously, some people seem to fuss too much about trims. At times when my hair has grown, it didn`t seem to develop anything in need of cutting off. Not that it`s grown that much but look at hippies. Old pix from that era show them with long beautiful hair, but some of those guys probably didn`t bother washing, let alone trimming their hair. Yet somehow it`s grown nicely, not into a brittle rat`s nest. I guess the quality of one`s hair split end-wise varies from person to person, but if you can avoid trims while growing hair, I think most people can pull it off. Split ends don`t need to be cut off the moment they appear. There are people who haven`t cut their hair at all in years and it hasn`t done them any harm.

I`ve had good luck with 1/2 inch trims every other month, but it takes a lot of patience. It`s been 4 years and 3 months since I had a very short haircut, and ever since I`ve gotten 1/2 an inch trimmed every other month. My hair is now just below bra-strap length and healthier than the last time it was long, which was before that short haircut 4 years ago. I`m sure the progress is slower than if I didn`t get trims as often, but it`s worked for me. The woman who cuts may hair has been very supportive and good about cutting off no more than 1/2 inch, and sometimes it seems like less. Good growing, everybody!
My hair is finally about bra strap length which has been a bit of a struggle. I am part african american so my hair is pretty brittle and I used to use heat and chemicals. Now I only get thermal reconditioning(japanese process) and I no longer use heat. I have major splits though from past abuse. Stylist always tell me to chop it and start over but I hate my hair short. Instead Ive bought some trimming shears and use them when ever I get bored. I simply go through my hair and cut just above the split end. This should be effective right? Or should I just cut it. I definetly find less splits now, and keep my hair oiled and up in a bun most of the time. Any advice?

Hair grows from the roots, not from the tips, so getting haircuts or trims really has no affect on the rate that your hair grows. However, what getting trims does do, is keep your hair looking healthier. Getting regular trims helps eliminate split ends, which can cause the hair to stop growing or look unhealthy.

Everyone I know says you should get your hair trimmed( :|just dusted)every few months at least. If you are letting your hair grow it supposivly makes your hair grow faster, gets rid of spilt ends, and thus just basically makes your hair healthier:). :DHope this helps!:D
I get a dusting about once a month. That is where you snip off any split ends and any strays that are longer than the rest, but don`t take off any of the length. I have my room mate do it for me. I do her hair the same way. We are both growing our hair out and trust that the other will not cut off too much. Right now mine is about to the top of my bra strap in the back. I want to grow my hair to my waist so I really don`t want to lose any length when I get trims. My room mate`s hair is a few inches longer and also would like hers to her waist.
they say to trim this often to either keep a style in shape (and long hair doesn`t really need this!) and also to keep them in business. if everyone went to the hairdresser once a year there certainly woudln`t be the need for so many hairdressers! personally, i have a haircut at the hairdresser about once a year. i have my mum or a close friend trim about 1/8-1/4" from the ends every few months which keeps them straight, but only do this when it needs it. i think that if you cut your hair every month it would certainly slow your growth progress! i think that the trick is to take really good care of your hair, and then you don`t have the need for cutting at all! good luck!
I`ll be interested in the replies to this one, because I am wrestling with the same issue myself. My hair is longer than ever, and about two inches from my goal.
The girls I know with beautiful, very long hair say the trick is to get one good cut and then blow off the salon for several months and just let it /grow/. This is at odds with everything I`ve ever read in beauty magazines, which say that you MUST get trims every 6 to 8 weeks, no matter what. Of course, beauty mags support the beauty industry...

hmm...well personally i get my hair trimmed every month but of course i only get like 1/8" trimmed off and my hair grows about 3/4" a month so i don`t really mind it much:) my hair gets split ends very quickly so i have to get it trimmed...if i didn`t work at a place which believes long hair on guys is wrong and didn`t have to wear that stupid hat all the time i wouldn`t have such weak hair;/

I trim my hair about every 6 months. My hair doesn`t seem to need trimmed often. I guess I must take really good care of it; I`ve never had any split ends. My hair averages 1/2 inch a month which is typical. If I got a trim every month then it would take twice as long to grow.
Hello, I saw two people that I hadn`t seen in months. One of used to work at the same place I do and the other one is my dentist`s secretary. When I saw them I was stunned to see how long and beautiful their hair was. It looked so shiny, healthy and long. I asked each of them how they grew their hair this way. I remember seeing their hair a little past their shoulders. Each of them told me that they get monthly trims (just a little bit of hair). Do any of you also trim your hair on a monthly basis? Have you seen this help your hair?
