QuoteReplyTopic: dry hair problem- help!!! Posted: August 19 2005 at 4:06pm
I was getting my hair cut yesterday, and as the stylist was cutting she commented that my hair was very dry. At first I didn't know what she was talking about since I always thought my hair was pretty normal. But when I got home I saw that she was right- in the back my hair is really soft and normal, but in the front and on the sides my hair is so dry and frizzy! Can anyone recommend a good deep conditioner or some other affordable solution? Thanks a bunch!

One winter I had this problem and went to a salon. They gave me
this heated clay conditioning treatment which fixed it. Don't
know what the product was though.
Barring that you could invest in some high-quality hair contitioning treatment and do like a 30 minute treatment.
How about an second conditioner? What you can do is do a light conditioner such as Suave or White Rain, then rinse, then do your regular conditioner. This would come after a regular shampoo wash... so wash, condition, condition.
All i can say is to use VIVE by L'Oreal Paris!!-(shampoo and conditioner) I had the same problem as you, my hair was dry and puffy and VIVE basically "straightened" it out without damaging it! Hope that helpz!

You may want to start by upping your fluids. I have noticed when I make a true effort to drink 8-10 glasses of water a day, my dry strands noticeably soften.
Also....using jojoba oil as a deep conditioning treatment just on the dry sections will help. I also do what AnaisSatin mentioned and roostertail my conditioners.
I recently went through a hair color disaster...at the hands of my professional hairdresser (long horrible story) and my hair was painfully dry as a result of getting everything fixed.
While I was trying to deal with the super dry hair I would shampoo with 1/2 teaspoon of ARTec Smoothing Conditioner in a 1 quart bottle of lukewarm water. Yes..I shampooed with conditioner. Then I would rinse well and apply RF Karite deep conditioner. It is so rich and creamy that it instantly softened my dry crunchy hair. It is expensive though so I used only a little on the super dry sections. Then I rinsed again and finished w/a cool water finish. Then I used a leave-in conditioner. I like Phyto9 because it has macademia nut oil which would not work for someone with fine/thin strands...but I also like Aveda Curessence spray as a good detangler/leave-in.
After a few weeks of that routine and lots of water...my hair softened considerably. There is nothing eeckier than dry hair. It just feels bad to me, like my hair is about to crack.

After years of perfect Matrix Socolor subtle blonde highlights I wound up with red roots, chocolate brown middle and blonde ends. My (now former) hairdresser decided to switch me from Matrix to Redken w/out telling me first or even asking if I was OK with it. I was shocked when I discovered that she had glopped a completely different brand on my head. I had a color line that was horrible. The Redken burnt my scalp and my eyes watered for days. Then I had to have the color stripped which left my hair dry as a bone. It was a horrible experience. My hair is almost back to the way it was but lots and lots of conditioning and TLC.

There's just no excuse for that. I'm glad you didn't forgive.
I think I read that in your journal or somewhere.
I have a similar story but it's not something bad like that.
I went for a trim one day and after the trim she asked if I wanted the neck hair cleaned up and I said yes.
I felt her tugging my hair this way and that way but I couldn't tell
what she was doing. I'd never felt it tugged like this before. My hair
was at least 25 inches long at the time. And it was really wet still
from washing instead of just spraying. The tugging stops and she grabs
the trimmers. I couldn't tell what she had done but my hair felt tight.
Like as if she had clipped it up or something. So she trims the hairs
and then says I'm done. I didn;t understand why she would tell me I was
done when my hair still felt like it was clipped up. I didn't think she
was gonna give me the clip if there was one. So I reached back and my
hair was in a braid. That was the first time I had ever had a braid.
She said that she did that to get the hair out of the way. It made it
easier for her. Then she asked me if I wanted it taken down. This was
like 6 or more years ago and I was not really comfortable wearing
"styles" around my Mom nor my Step Dad who was living with us back
then. I didn't even like them noticing if I had it trimmed. I always
had my trim and then if it wasn't blown dry it would be dry by the time
I got home or in the case of this day it was raining. I wouldn't need
to explain why my hair was wet. So I told her to take it down. The
other thing was that she had done it so tight that it hurt a bit.
Looking back now I wish I would have let it stay. Maybe if it wouldn't
have been tight I'd have at least let it stay till I got home and taken
it down in the car.
It was a nice thing for a stylist to do, I just wish she would have not
done it so tight. Tight combined with the shock of finding out what it
was was and being afraid was just too much.
Yes...nothing hurts worse than a too tight braid. I probably would have taken it down as well. But yes, it was nice of her to do that and probably good that she didn't clip too much hair. That would really have sucked.
The thing that was most frustrating about my hair color disaster was that I specifically reminded her when I called that Matrix SoColor 11N was what she used on my hair and that she did foils. Then she got to the appointment 20 minutes late (I had her first appointment at 9:00 am) and she had me sit in the chair and put the rubber cape on and then next thing I know she is glopping this brown gook all over my head. I freaked and asked her what she was doing and she said...Oh well this will work just as well but much faster. I was confused and said...but is it Matrix? And she said...oh yes. Just a little different version. And I kept saying...but will it lift? And she said yes. And she had me sit there while the color "set". The rest is history and I was horrified. She never did admit it was Redken until after all the damage was done.

Karen - OMG, Im so sad and angry to hear what happened! How
infuriating! Why did she think she could get away with lying to
you, especially when you told her exactly what you wanted?
UGH. I hope your hair recovers, and that you find a trustworthy color specialist!

Hi Dave,
Yes...very infuriating. I have to believe that I had to go through this to understand even better the pain and sorry that people go through when they have hair diasters that occur at the hands of their hairdressers. I get so many weekly emails about disasters but now I know firsthand how heartbreaking it can be. And how frustrating to try and figure out what to do.
My hair is recovering with help from lots of deep conditioning (I started using RF Karite and am very impressed) and lots of TLC. I did have to have some split ends removed (sigh) but all and all I think I escaped with no long range damage. Still hunting for a new color expert. Keep your fingers crossed.
Thank god for my many hairdresser & haircolor friends around the country that stepped up and helped me recover from the red roots and brown middles. I am back to all blonde now. WHEW. Close call.
Hugs, Karen

I have very dry hair also...What's been helping mine is once a week I wash my hair and then put Neutrogena triple moisture conditioner in and sleep with it in my hair. I wear a shower cap to bed. It really really moisturizes even better than my Redken Heavy Cream.
