Yes, it is true. My wife`s hair grew much faster during her 3 pregnancies, about 50% faster. I think I`ve read that hair during pregnancy stays in a growth mode without ever having a resting/falling out phase. As a result, hardly any hair falls out and it all keeps growing, creating thicker, faster growing hair. Nails grow faster, too. The body`s natural hormones promote this faster growth, and prenatal vitamins do as well.
Like all good things, the faster hair growth comes to an end. After pregnancy, you can have excessive hair loss for a while because basically the switch that kept it from falling out during the previous 9 months gets turned off, and more than usual falls out for a while. Depending on the thickness of your hair, the post-pregnancy thinning can be noticeable.
Hers thinned out some, but not enough to be noticeable since she had thick hair to begin with. I understand that with some women it`s noticeable, but usually very temporary.

I`ve given birth three times and have definitely experienced the "fabulously thick" hair during pregnancy! It`s all part of a pregnant woman`s "glow." It`s true that the hormones are mainly responsible for this.
However, I also think that every pregnant woman should know that often (though not always, of course), 3-4 months postpartum, when the hormones have dropped off, the hair tends to get thinner. It can be a bit scary if you don`t know it`s coming!
In fact, a close friend surmised that this is the reason that a lot of new moms get their cut hair shortly after giving birth. It`s probably true.
