This is true, the thing that gets you waves is brushing, as long as you are consistent with your brushing then your waves should start to show in 3-6 weeks with products or no products. The products kinda gives your waves that finishing touch to make it stand out a little bit more too, and most products actually help keep your hair healthy, which is why I recommend at least using one product and sticking with out all the way through.

i tried the pomade or w/e but it aint do much so i just stood for the water and a brush..

surprisingly thats all you really need..

i read some where using hot water makes your hair brittle and harder to wave though

perhaps, can't be sure bout the hot water thing, but in any case might as well just stick to warm, I wouldn't wash my hair in what I consider hot water anyway (the term simply hot is somewhat vague...)
