QuoteReplyTopic: Hair Straightening!!! Posted: January 12 2000 at 3:22am
I've written in bout my dry and severely damaged hair. And at the moment I'm doing all sorts of things to prevent these problems. I blow dry my hair less and also try to find the ARTec's serum.(it's very hard to find this product here)I'm just wondering... if the condition of my hair improves... is it ok for me to straighten my hair? I've heard that hair straightening could actually cause a lot of damage to the hair... is it true? If it is... what can I do to prevent it? Hope anyone who has any experience in straightening her hair could write in! Thanks...
Emilia,I assume that you have curly hair that you want to straighten permanently. I have curly hair and have been advised against straightening my hair over and over again by my stylist. I have a friend who used to get ther hair chemically straightened all the time up untill college. When she decided to grow it out the parts that had been straightened were really dried out and frizzy compared to the new hair growing. If you do have curly hair you should check out the website www.naturallycurly.com (the link is on this website in the LINKS section) Maybe you could learn to love your curly hair! Good Luck with whatever you choose.Regina

I don't really know about the damage you do to your hair when you straighten it, but I imagine it can be minimized by using the proper products. I straighten my hair daily and I've found that Rusk's STR8 keeps it looking less damaged. I just ordered Artec's Smoothing Serum from the WWBeauty Store and I've included the link below. I would highly recommend either one of these products if you want to straighten your hair and keep it looking healthy!Lauren:)Related Link:WWBeauty Store
Emilia,I understand what you have been going through. I've had my hair chemically relaxed by a salon professional several times. Sure any form of perm will have some damage to your hair. If you wait the alloted time which is three to four months after each session before getting your locks relaxed again then you'll be fine. There are other factors that could come into play when dryness occurs. And sweat could be a major factor. The salt in sweat when going to the gym or working out, breaks down natural oils and makes hair really dry. Your best bet would be to wear a cotton headband while you work out to soak up the perspiration, and cut down to once a week washing and deep conditioning. Whenever you use heated styling appliances use a leave in conditioner with therma-shield in it. One to three times a week, apply a leave in cream hairdressing product because it helps retain moisture. You also might want to try a new line that can be found in beauty supply stores called Clairol's New Textures & Tones collection. They have special products made for people with relaxed hair that provide moisture and flexibility without the greasy feel.
