and how it is bad for your hair. First I want to know how it's harmful and if this is bad, what other "non-salon" shampoos are good to use. (for normal or permed hair).
Any ideas anyone?
Thanks!

couldn't tell ya on the first. On the second - had perms alot in my lifetime. Used all kinds of products. Rusk Wired is the absolute bomb for curls. It costs $10 for a creme tube (one tube lasted me about 9 months). It's like after-shower setting creme. Defines and holds curls. Smells good. Shampoo? I liked Aussie's lines (3 minute miracle IS a miracle!). Don't do the Aussie hairspray for curls - I had actually broken off a small strand at the end because this stuff is soooo stiff. Hate Herbal Essences other than hairspray. Hate Finesse LOADS. Hate VO5 - its crap. Salon Selectives is o.k. Suave is not really that bad, if you're in a $ bind. The Paul Mitchell line is excellent - of course. Don't do two-in-one. Weighs down curls. Pantene I'm out to lunch on since I haven't used it in a coon's age. The new smell almost killed me. The Frizz Ease and Infusium line both rock. I hated Studio line.
Is it like a home perm? Where do you get it? I'm trying to talk my mom into a perm and I've been telling her we could do it if we could find a good brand.
Rusk Wired is a styling product much like mousse, although it comes in a creme form. You can find it at Sally's or one of those hair care stores in the mall. You cannot find it at most drug stores, but it IS excellent stuff. Perms...good Lord, I haven't done a home perm in ages. Stay AWAY from Quantum. I have been fried far too many times by them. Believe it or not, Olgilvie is pretty good. If you have a stylist that you go to even off and on, I would go to that person and ask them what they would recommend as a home perm for your hair. All hair is different. Some may need perms for "Hard to curl" hair. Some may need slight wave or especially for colored/damaged hair. There are perms out there like that. Your stylist can recommend some good ones. Like I've said, it's been a long while since I've had a home perm done by dear old mom.
When you throw all those brands together, have you tried EACH and EVERY product the company makes? Many companies have both harsh and gentle products, so one type of shampoo in a company may have a great formulation and another type may have a bad formulation.
Unless you've tried each and every product, please try to be more specific about which products have and haven't worked for you.
Hey thanks for the feedback. We used to home perm each other... back in the 80's. And we used Ogilvie. My great aunt worked at the factory in the next town and got them for us at .25 cents a box! Wow! And most salons now would charge me about $100 for my head of hair OR my mom's too. Here's a picture if your curious now:
