hey all -
first i'll just say - i know this is a hair color question :) and that i should see a professional :) typically i do .. my hair colorist is going to be outta town when i need a touch up and i'm going outta town when she'll be back, so in the interim i'm kicking around the idea of coloring my own hair plus my extensions -
i currently have hair in that's 18" bohyme FR, my own hair color is around a 10/16, my extensions are put in by heather in ATL, pinchbraids, to blend. i have a lot of auburn lowlights (via extensions).
anyhoo- i love the auburn, and want to go all auburn! i love it! over the summer i went platinum blonde and my hair is still fairly porous, although less porous since going back to my own haircolor. so - i'm going in for a pinchbraid tightening next weekend and my hairdresser is not working before i go outta town myself...last night i tried a demi permanent auburn color i picked up at sally's and did a strand test on my own hair and the extensions in a hidden underlayer - the color was beautiful and the hair/extension strand blended fine, but the color washed out this morning when i washed my hair - do i need a protein filler and should i go with a permanent color? the prior bleaching is what makes me nervous...
any advice welcome, i know i should just wait till i can get my colorist to do it, but i am very impatient :) thanks all!
Cheryl
ahh i should add - my hair color now is fine, but the ends (presumably because of my prior bleaching) got fairly ashy, which i manage by using the shimmer lights warming shampoo (the opposite of the purple silver shampoo :) )
im no good on the coloring of extension hair....so far, its always been too unpredictable for me :(
BUT, for my own hair.....its sorta been the same scenario that you have just described...bleached hair that's very porus on the ends that i've taken darker gradually over this past year
at first, when i put darker demi permanent color it faded quickly.....through trial (and definately error) i have it down to a science (remember, this is just my experience, i hope it helps you in some way but i am in no way a pro colorist !)
when i took my platinum hair to a darker blonde, i used GOLD protein filler in with the demi permanent hair color....about three applications of that, each applied several weeks apart, the color finally didnt fade away
next, taking darker blonde hair to light brown, RED protein filler mixed in with the demi permanent light brown color....it took and stuck right away :)
since your hair is already lightened and porus, the demi permanent color is actually acting as a permanent color because the hair is already 'open' to receive color...if you use a permanent color on that porus hair its just going to cause unnecessary damage and on top of that it will be just as likely to fade as the demi
anyway....good luck!
edit to add: here's a thread on hair color i think might help you too:
i have a wack of spare extension hair to experiment wth, so in turn i'll let you know what ends up with my extension dying...as for my own hair i don't have as much of that to spare :)

I dye my extension hair (while it's in my head) with non-ammonia dye (it's like $3.00-$4.00 at Target )the kind I use is by Revlon (cause they don't test on animals!) and I use 2-3 boxes , 2 at first to saturate, then 1 a week later for good measure. I'm sure that other "gentle" gray coverage level 3 dyes would work great.
