QuoteReplyTopic: Curly hair style on guys? Posted: July 26 2002 at 5:38pm
I`d like your opinion. I`m a 33 year old guy. I really, really like curly hair. I have wavy hair, but would really like it to be much curlier - in the neighborhood of Justin Timberlake curly. My hairstylist has said the only way to get there is of course with a perm.
Not being sure of wanting to be "married" to a perm without knowing how it would turn out, my longtime hairstylist suggested curling my hair with a very small curling iron to get an idea. The curls turned out great and it was just what I wanted - but my stylist then said a perm won`t be quite the same.
I left the salon with my head in curls and decided to think about it, AND get my wife`s opinion (who didn`t know I was doing this, but know`s I love curly hair). She, was "OK" with the style, but said she wasn`t really sure she wanted me to get "permed". She suggested that if I really liked these curls why not just have this done occassionally (the curling iron curls).
So here are a couple questions. Is it out of fashion for a guy to get a perm? Would it be better to go with my wife`s idea? Since I really like my hair curly, shouldn`t my wife support my desire to have a curly style? Any other options anyone can suggest?
If you are not sure if you want a perm, there are two possible options. Ogilvie makes a temporary perm called Seven Day Curls which lasts a few shampoos, and Wella makes a temporary perm called Headlines Perm which lasts 5 - 6 weeks. If you know someone who might be willing to give you a temporary perm, it might be worth it, especially the Ogilvie Perm since it only lasts a few shampoos.
I don`t know that perms will ever be "in" but it seems that curly and permed hair is more popular today than two or three years ago. If you want to try the perm, go for it, as long as you trust your stylist. Good luck!
Thanks for the idea on the temporary perms. Have you ever tried one ... or anyone else out here? If I try a temporary perm and like it, can I have my stylist then give me a perm. Or, can I just use the temporarty perm whenever I want curls for a few days? I know perms are hard on your hair, so I`m curious if the temporary perms are less hard.
I have not tried either of the temporary perms, but I understand the chemicals aren`t as strong as a regular perm. I`m not sure if you can perm over a temporary perm (not sure if the temporary perm solution washes out entirely or if it simply weakens and remains on the hair), so you might want to ask your stylist.
For more information, you might want to visit a Yahoo group called "permsformen" as some members have tried these perms.
As a girl, i see no problem with you having your hair permed, if that`s what you like, then do it. If you have a wife, you should feel even more comfortable about it. Does your hair grow quickly? How long is it now? Did you like the curling iron enough that you would want that every day? Just some stuff to ask yourself. If your hair grows quickly, then it will probly only last a month depending on length. I got my hair permed once or twice and loved it, now i realized that my hair is naturally curly, but if i didn`t try all the products and stuff i never would have known it was...maybe you could try some curly hair shampoo, just to add some oomph to your waves Hope this helps God bless
Thanks for the support Patti! My hair grows at about an average pace. It`s about 4" on the top and then tapers down to only an inch on the very back and sides. I really like the style from the curling iron. I don`t think that would be a realistic alternative to do every day ... it took over half an hour when the stylist did it!!! And, it seemed a little out of place being a guy - but that`s not really a hang up for me.
I have tried several of the curl products, and they don`t seem to do too much for me. There have been several posts on the boards here and I looked them over and tried a couple, but at the end of the day I think I just have waves, and want more curl than I can get "naturally". Although if you have suggestions on products I`d be interested in your experience.
Anyone have any experience with the temp perms? I think I may just have my stylist do the curlying iron style once more, and if I really like it as much as I did the first time, just go for the perm!!! (the encouragement here helps!)
