hi Victor,I first heard about the 'breakage' part from a hairdresser this year. He commented on it as there were probably a lot of these short strands.I suppose you are right, I have seen these funny spots on the hair shaft before. Regarding the tapering at the end, my hair is also naturally wavy, and wavy hair grows in uneven thickness along the whole shaft, that's how it curls along. But then not all of my hair is short as some which survived are pretty long and at least a foot in length. oh well I guess we can't fight genes, can we? trouble is, I never had these problems when I was younger! Does this mean I am destined for short hairstyles?

> I don't seem to have split ends but I have> no idea why mine grows in short strands and appears> thinner at the ends. The very last part is the best clue, I think. It looks to me like you are genetically predisposed to have shorter hair. When a hair first emerges from the follicle after a period of dormancy, it starts out rather small and increases in girth until it has achieved its peak growth rate. That gives the tapered look to the ends. In other words, it looks to me like there is no breakage -- your hair simply doesn't grow any longer before falling out.To identify breakage, inspect the strands of your hair searching for pale spots. These will typically be very small, period sized spots along the hair shaft. If you find one, bend the hair near the spot. Does the hair bend more right at the spot? If yes, that spot on your hair is damaged and subject to breakage. If you pull the hair apart, it will almost certainly break at that point.Related Link:Silicones Thread on the Men's Long Hair Hyperboard

My trying-to-grow-long hair appears to break a lot - I don't mean dropping off in bunches, but that it seems to grow in short strands instead of a continuous longer one as the length increases. I think it is called hair breakage, as opposed to split ends where the hair shaft splits into two right at the end and travels up. I don't seem to have split ends but I have no idea why mine grows in short strands and appears thinner at the ends.I don't think I am brushing real hard or am treating it wrongly with harsh shampoos. It could be due to the genes as the new hair on the top of my head appears to grow in short strands too. You can imagine how discouraging it is to have hair breakages when my ideal is long, even length hair!
