I don't think it's so much that your hair gets dependent on them, as that you do... if your hair isn't supersmooth and shiny and frizz-free then you think there's something wrong with it... when really that may be how your hair naturally is. Or they're covering up damage, because they make your hair look so nice and smooth you don't notice any damage and if you stop your hair all of a sudden seems really messed up.-jennifer j
Hi Christine.I've never tried serums, so I'm not sure how they work. However, silicone products can definitely be drying in the long term.Something you may want to try instead of serums to help tame little frizzies and fly-aways is to use oil instead. Sometimes when I want my hair to look very smooth and not have fly-aways I apply a tiny amount of Aveda beautifying oil to the ends. I take about five to ten drops of the oil and rub it between my hands. Then I gently comb through the last foot or two of my hair with my fingers, letting the oil become fairly evenly distributed. With this very tiny amount, it doesn't look oily, but does stay smooth better. This could cause your hair to become dirty faster because oil does tend to attract dirt, but I think this can happen with other styling products as well. The best part is that the oil will help condition the hair in the long term, instead of drying it out, while it helps provide a shinier, smoother appearance.Good luck,Teresa

I have been using a split-end serum on my ends for several months now to tame the frizz and prevent splits. But I have found the ends are rather brittle and drier than ever. Well most hairdressers advocate the use of serums to "control that frizz and promote the shine".I suppose in the short run hair would appear glossier, but in the long run, hair seems 'dependent' on the serums and appears drier without them. I have a feeling this had something to do with the silicone ingredients like Dimethesil (if i got the spelling right). If this is true, then the 14-day shine from Pantene is just a hoax. i have read many stories about women with drier hair in the long term after using this shampoo and others.Would it be better to avoid serums completely?
