Hello...I have a similar problem. My hair is dyed auburn and I want my natural color back - light, neutral brown. I've tried dying it that color with permanent tint but it only gets darker auburn. My hair is a couple inches past my shoulders.Karen suggested using vegetable coloring on the regrowth until the roots become managable. I'm not sure what vegetable coloring is! Is Redken Shades EQ a type of vegetable color? Is this an at-home procedure, or salon-only? Sorry for all the questions. Thanks, Sandra

>Hello.. I had to put my two cents in here. I am 39 with 40 breathing heavily down my neck! I also have lots of silver coming in. Mostly on the front and sides. I did some coloring with Natural Instincts last year for about 6 months. I hated being a slave to a box. I gave up. It was miserable for about 4 months while my silver hair inched down past my chin. Then when it got past my chin it actually looked fine. I decided against anymore coloring of any kind...since I have a goal of growing my hair to knee length, I was scared of drying it out or damaging it. Now I really do not mind my salt and pepper look. The longer it gets the prettier it looks really. I don't know what length of hair you have...but gray hair can be beautiful at any length if taken care of. You can buy shampoos formulated for silver hair to take out that mousey look. Aveda makes one and I have found that Nature's Gates Original Herbal gives my silver a bright shine. I do not have any yellowing in my silver but I know from others that formulated shampoos will take care of that problem. Good luck. Here is an option that works....Use a vegetable coloring to continue to color the hair until you have had some significant growth. Vegetable coloring is safe, has no chemicals and will not harm your hair. However, it will buy you some time while the roots are growing out.I did this one year when I had to let my highlights grow out and it worked great. After about 3 months I could live with the roots. The other option is to have some streaks of gray (or your natural color) put into the body of your hair to balance the roots. However, you are actually still using chemicals if you do that. So you may want to just go with the temporary coloring that lasts just through several shampoos. You can also use a Roux cover up stick on the roots to buy you some grow out time. Remember that parts make it look worse. So you may want to get rid of any obvious parts while you are growing out your hair.Hope that helps. If not..please post again.Congrats on your decision to go natural.Let us know here at Hair Talk how it goes.Best wishes,Karen> I have decided to stop dying my hair the auburn color> it was in high school (I'm 45 now!) and really see> whats under that red hair!
