What to do about my shampoo?

After I rinse my hair in the shower, I rinse it again in the sink with cold water. This generaly removes all the residue. Jen is right about just washing the roots. I also feel that most people do not need all that much shampoo to wash their hair. The amount they use on comercials is insane. I hope this helps.

No, leaving soap in your hair will not damage it, it will only make it feel "ucky" and sticky. When something like this happens, you may want to just dunk your head under the shower and rinse out the soap one more time.
