Hi there,I swam competitively for 12 years and although in the last two years I have seen less of the pool than I would like, I still carry some pretty good 'hair' advice. First of all, ALWAYS rinse your hair with fresh water before you enter the pool. Then, slather on lots of conditioner (any will do, it doesn't have to be expensive) and put on your cap. A tip: fill your cap with frsh water and then dump and your cap onto your head. Finally, when your class is over rinse your hair with fresh water very well and shampoo with a good mineral removing shampoo, such as Agree Swimmers Solution or Ulta Swim. About the cap-- I have ALWAYS worn a latex cap (about $2.50). There are silicone caps and the old bonet types, but latex stays on far better than any. Hope you enjoy your classes:)Sherry~> I am starting a lap swim class in a few weeks, I color> my hair and know the chlorine is damageing, I read a> book by Jane Katz which has a lot of tips, she says to> keep tinted hair as dry as possible and use a velcro> swim cap.I have never herd of this type..any> suggestions on caps and conditioners to use?

I have been swimming for many years and have never sceen a "velcro swim cap" About 20 years ago I ordered a "dry-band" from a Walter Drake catalog. It was a white headband made of a polyfoam and it went around the hairline and fastened in the front with a velcro closer. It did help as it absorbed water that seeped in under a swim cap but it did not keep out water. I have not sceen anything like it in years. I have copied it in a way by cutting off the bottom of a regular racing cap and putting it on like a head band then wearing another swim cap over it. It keeps the second cap from making the red marks on my forehead that the more watertight caps make. I perfer the bubble-creep caps with a strap for the pool.See my post to Laura the waterskier for more info and web sites . Also go to search on hair boutique and enter swim cap we had a thread going on this a couple of months ago. The idea by Janna in that thread is also excellent and works well. Protection is really the key.Try the ultra-swim line of conditioners. They are developed for swimmers, and are not expensive and work well.Check out a local swim shop if there is one or go to www.kastawayswimwear.com they also have the Speedo strap bubble caps,in white, black and green..The latest post in this thread mentions baby oil.It would make a excellent and cheap conditioner as well.
Hi, 20+ years ago after totally ruining my hair at the ocean from the salt water and chlorine in the pool I vowed it would not happen again. I tried everything in terms of conditioners to put in my hair to coat it but everything the salt and chlorine ate thru. Baby oil is the one thing that has worked all this time. Just rub a teaspoon in your hands and pat on all over your hair and comb thru. You can swim all day (I do and so does my daughter and this works for us ), and it is still in there. Anyway one shampoo with just a bit more shampoo than normal gets it all out. Simple as that. We have a pool and we are in it all summer long, and have no problem what so ever. Diane

It's very gentle and effective. Check out their website (malibu2000.com).
