I got in the habit of laying my head on the pillow and laying my hair out to the side so I won't lay on it. I wake up tangle-free. Also, try and get a satin pillowcase this helps to rid of tangles because satin is softer than cotton and satin helps your hair glide over the pillow when you move. Hope this helps.

>Hi, E.!The only thing that I can think is that your hair is quite dry. I also wanted to ask you whether you tend to move around a bit while you are working. I know myself that I spend hours in front of the computer and purposely move around periodically. For some people, the movement can cause a lot of knots. My suggestion involves adding some conditioning to your hair when you do the shampoo routine. It's obvious that you don't like to use a lot of products, chemicals, etc. That's fine, but I think maybe some additional conditioning might get rid of some of the snarls.First, I would suggest Aubrey Organics Ginkgo Leaf and Ginseng Root Hair Moisturizing Jelly. It is an excellent product and keeps your hair silky smooth and tangle free. You can use this after you shampoo and condition your hair as usual. Spread a good amount through your hair, especially the last few inches of your hair. That's where the tangles seem to start and where your hair is usually the most dry. Then, dry your hair as usual. My other suggestion is an additonal leave-in conditioner, Infusium 23 Leave-In Conditioner, Original Formula. I know that some people here have indicated that it does contain a -cone product which can build up in your hair, but I have never had a problem. I have been using the product consistently for several years. The Original Formula is quite moisturizing, and even without the Ginkgo Moisturizing Jelly, keeps your hair tangle-free, wet or dry. [I personally like the Ginkgo Moisturizing Jelly because of the amount of shine that it adds to my hair.] They do make a dry hair formula, but I have found that it is too oily.Lastly, as a lover of jojoba oil which you already know, continue to use this on the ends of your hair. If necessary, use it on the last few inches of your hair. There is no reason for your hair to be so dry. My hair has gone from being crackly dry to normal-well-balanced in about 1 1/2 years time. I use a small amount of jojoba oil on my ends every night. Also, consider giving yourself some monthly hot oil treatments.Oops, forgot something. You indicated that you braid your hair at night for sleeping. Have you ever considered wearing a satin nightcap? That keeps your hair extremely soft. You can either put your braid in the cap or simply twist your hair around and put it loosely in the cap. The latter is what I do. A cap should cost you around $4-$5. Some people also just use a silk scarf.Hope this helps....Jade21My hair gets extremely tangled. Big knots often form> in my hair for no apparant reason. Try detangling your hair in the shower as you rinse out your conditioner, using a wide tooth comb. Wet your contioned hair so that it is very watey but still has a lot of conditioner in it. Use your comb to work with the water flowing through your hair. Don't force the tangles. If this does not work, repeat. Oh wait, you wanted prevention. Well, if you are already braiding your hair at bedtime, there is not a whole lot else you can do besides keeping the hair well conditioned (dry hair gets more tangles) and getting regular trimss.

My hair gets extremely tangled. Big knots often form in my hair for no apparant reason. I have a sedentary desk job and don't own a convertible so I have no idea why this happens.I have gotten some great detangling tips from this board, such as the use of johoba oil. I detangle my hair evry night and braid it before going to sleep. Now I'm hoping someone has some suggestions on how to prevent the tangles from happening.I have dry hair that reaches my elbows. It has never been chemcially treated. I wash twice a week with ArcTec smoothing shamppo/conditioner. I add a little oil to my hair but use no other styling products. Thanks for any advice.
