Hi, Libby!I have to agree with Rachael and jj. Someone mentioned going off birth control pills and medications and the other mentioned going off of St. Johns Wort. When your hair starts to shed like yours has, it is likely that the shedding has been a long time coming. It could have been several months before that your hair was preparing to shed. You said that you take a multi-vitamin. Check to see how much Vitamin A, not pro-Vitamin A (beta carotene), is in the supplement. Is it over 5,000IU? If it is, that could be your problem, especially if you eat a good diet already rich in Vitamin A foods. I had an experience with this many years ago now, but as soon as you stop taking too much, the shedding will stop. Also, your friend may be right. You may be really conscious of the hairs you are losing because you are trying to take great care of your hair. There's one way that you can test out your friend's theory. If you can do this emotionally, for one day keep track of the hairs that you are losing. As many that you can keep track of, put them in an envelope. Then, at the end of the day, literally count them. If you have lost in excess of 100 hairs, be sure to see a physician.I have to tell you that after an allergic reaction to an antibiotic which my doctor had prescribed for a high fever several years ago, I lost much hair, so I know what it's like to see the hair come out in the comb and bowl. It's very devastating, but your hair can recover. The allergic reaction was about four months in duration and my hair started coming out about three months thereafter. That's what I meant when I said, your shedding might have been coming for a while.I hope this helps and please don't hesitate to see a doctor just to make yourself feel better emotionally.Take care,Jade21I have been visiting this board for two months, and I> 've really learned so much about hair, hair care> products and overall care. I have the same problem and at times feel like I lose a lot of hair. Everyone knows how their own hair sheds and when it seems like more than normal, it's frightening. I know many factors could be contributing to hair loss, including certain medications & hormonal changes. After I had my baby 2 years ago, my hair fell out constantly and this was supposedly normal. However, it never quite recovered from that and still falls out alot. I notice my hair being thinner now too, in general. I read an article recently that said the majority of women in their 30s (yes, I'll divulge my age here) experience dramatic hair thinning, as opposed to their 20s. That could be part of my problem too. If you aren't using the wrong kind of brush, or products and your hair is healthy, I would try to just narrow down things you might be doing differently that could affect your hair. It could be something you'd never associate with hair loss. If it doesn't pass, you might wish to see a doc. However, it's probably just temporary. Take care, Kelly F.
Hi:I just wanted to let you know I had the same problem last year. I noticed a lot of hair falling out and everybody said it was normal, but it wasn't for me. I could visably see my hair thinning. Then I started to try to see what I did different. It was the St. John's Wart. I stopped taking it and after about a month it stopped falling out. Are you taking St. John's or any other medication. Good Luck. Rachael
