Thanks. To Lisa/Holly;Well unfortunately, you have been damaged by an inexpierenced stylist that apparently was after the cash and not your satisfaction! First, hilighted hair can be permed quite successfully and be 'liveable' after the perm if PROPERLY DONE! However its too late for you now and we must try to recondition your hair and make the best of it. Try a mixture of Redken PPT and Climatress Intensive conditioner and Joico K-Pak conditioner and Wheat germ oil. On freshly shampooed hair mix equal parts of each conditioner and equal amounts of wheat germ oil and PPT apply to towel dried hair and wrap the head with a plastic trash bag tightly and leave on minimum of 1 hr, and rinse with cool water, repeat as ness. Shampoo with 'shampoo' only every other time and 'shampoo' with conditioner only on alternate days so as not to remove all the oils from your hair. You can heat the mixture slightly in a microwave to improve penetration into the hair shaft or sit under a warm drier(best) during treatment. Be careful not to burn or overheat the mixture or yourself if you elect to heat it before application. Avocado and jojoba oils can also be used to supplement the mix all oils can be found in health food stores and the Redken/Joico conditioners in better salons. Sorry it took so long to answer, but I have been very busy. Please post or email and give me a progres report and I can 'prescribe' another treatment if this does not help. william

Hi Lisa,My personal experience may add some inspiration to your situation: Several years ago I permed my hair using an Ogilvy Home Perm kit. My hair is thick, curly / wavy and (as my stylist says) very course. I permed my hair because I was sick of the waves, so I though more curl would be better. Well, my hair took the perm so well that it was totally fried !! My hair was so dry and frizzed that I thought it would break off at my scalp. And honestly, I am surprised it didn't. Needless to say, I was extremely upset with my stupidity (at least I was the responsible party, not an incompetant stylist). I used Paul Mitchell's leave-in conditioner as wall as a regular conditioner, at least twice a day. It seemed as though I went through a bottle of conditioner every week ! I stayed away from gels and other alcohol containing products (as they dry hair out even more)and simply pulled my hair back and hoped no one would notice my damaged hair. After confessing to my stylist what I did to my hair, I started a monthly regimin of Malibu treatments. I don't remember all that this consisted of, but I do recall my stylist putting the Malibu "conditioner" on my head, wrapping my head with a towel, any my sitting under the dryer for about 20 minutes. After about 4 treatments (4 months) and about 2 hair cuts I could tell that my hair was improving. All in all, it took at least an entire year for my hair to recover, which included haircuts at 6 week intervals. I did learn the hard lesson of never perming my hair agian. I also have learned to live with my hair as it is and I appreciate the curls / waves I have. I hope your hair recovers soon. Keep positive !

Hi,I'm not a hairdresser but I think that your hair sounds like it's going to be O.K. Hair grows about 1/2 inch amonth, so that amount sounds normal. I think that because you had highlights in your hair, usually that's bleach, and that doesn't usualy work with a perm. It just too much for the hairstrands to take, and they can go awry. The new hair growing in wouldn't be affected. Maybe William can help out with this.Holly

hi,about 10 months ago I got a perm to even out my natural waves (big mistake). I was being impulsive and didnt think my hair would turn out like shit. Unfortunately my hairstylist was a flake (at London Hair in Eugene, OR.)and after asking her if it would do damage she said "no, its gonna look good". i already had blonde highlights in my hair. Anyway, after she was done I looked like a poodle and my hair was FRIED! my hair was so silky and beautiful before! why did i do this to myself? I thought bad perms only happened in cheap hair salons with inexperienced stylists. This woman was so unapologetic and could care less that my hair was ruined, literally. I had to go to the salon twice and practically beg for a refund (85.- way expensive) That salon is the worst Ive ever been to and they didnt even offer deep conditioning treatments. Oh, check this out, the manager of the shop said, "your hair can be fixed!" in the most condescending tone. Yeah right! If I had a free wish from a genie! I cried for days, and spent mucho dinero on hair products that didnt do crap. It seems like my hair is taking forever to grow back when before the perm it seemed like my hair grew fast. Is the interior structure of my hair or hair follicle, permanently damaged? I mean, my hair is growing back and it seems like its healthy. But when I look at the rest of my hair which is all dried out, I feel like its going to be like that forever. Am i paranoid? and will my hair eventually be nice again? also, it seems like my hair has grown from 4-5 inches in the past 10 months. Is that pretty normal? please respond. Thanks.
