I have waist-length, permanently colored hair. I use permenant color on the root growth and semi-permenant on the length. Since the length had been lightened previously, I don't need to add more permenant color onto it. The semi actually lasts a very long time! It can be done, although you have to really baby your hair. My hair is in very good condition and it's because of all the care I've given it. I use Clairol Compliments permenant and semi-permenant color. You can find this at Sally's Beauty. If you haven't had at-home coloring experience, your best bet is go to a salon. I could *never* get the right color from the salon! I started doing research on my own and now do the whole shebang meself! :-)Related Link:Shea Butter source

Hello, I have waist length dark strawberry blond hair. My hair is fine and tends to split at the ends, I guess it is average thickness. I've always wanted red hair, but I also want to keep growing it longer (possibly to my ankles). Would it be worth the effort and money to color it? Would it destroy my hair? Is it even possible on long hair? (I've never seen anyone with very long permanently dyed hair).
