You can grow 'em. But from your desciption I'd just buy some synthetic dreadlock extentions. Some may disagree, but you really should have a head of thick,tightly curled in order to loc up properly. I was also curious about how to start dredlocks...I have semi-short hair and it's mostly straight with some weird flippy body waves. It's about average thickness and tends to be somewhat fine. Any advice?

It depends on the nature - straight, curly, thick, thin - of your hair and its current length. Can you provide a few more details?> how do i start dredlocks?
