thats definitely a good idea.I agree highlights over a darker base looks much better.Thats exactly what i asked for the first appointment.A dark blonde base with light highlights.Syren:Thats not the problem. This salon actually carries the latest products and they're stylists are up to date on all the newest techniques. It was more a matter of her just getting more money.Which she did.Its ok though Maybe it will give me the incentive to quit letting people take advantage of me.Its hard for me to say no.Even if I'm paying someone for a service its hard for me to speak up.Like when she said she wouldnt do what I wanted I would have never been able to be like I'll just go to someone else.I would been afraid of making her angry. Its kind of embarrassing how easy going I am..Money is not an issue but I think I like the idea of doing it myself. At least If I mess it up I only have myself to blame. If a stylist messed up all I would do is probably cry and let her convince me it was my fault.I'm a huge pushover. It wouldnt be the first time. But I'm getting better.

Marie's idea is good! Do the base yourself and go to a pro - a different pro - for the high and low lights! That sounds like it would work, doncha think? I think there's a blonde hair board somewhere around here on hair talk - Jenny's talked about it. Maybe you should check that out for good info.
Longhair, where do you live? Are you in proximity to a big city where there are colorists who are a bit more...sophisticated? Like I said, here in CA, there are some colorists who specialize in blonde hair and their work is phenomenally gorgeous. Not that you have to find one of those, but there is so much new stuff in the color world - maybe your girl is just stuck in the 80s.
I have two clients who can't aford to come in for the works so they do there own base with high lift color and then I do a partil highlight and some times some low lights. It breaks up there base and looks pretyer than just HL or just allover color, they get a partial HL every other time they do there base. Eaven if your base is a bit brassy with the partil it will break it up. With all that said I do love being a brunet#4

Kirsty:yeah she uses bleach. The first two times I went it took like an hour. But the last two times It only took like 10-15 minutes to process.?
missy66:I do love blonde hair. This may sound weird but I like dark roots. Not like platinum or white blonde against black roots.I've seen that and it looks like little black bugs, lol. But like medium and darker shades.I think it can look good, lol.Like shakira before she lets them out too much.I think the four inches of roots was pretty excessive.
I will more and likely just go natural.Other people loved my dark hair. But It never really grew on me.I hate my hair to look stripey though.I think highlights are great. But for myself I wanted a dark blonde to light brown base with light highlights on top to lighten without going extreme.Thats exactly what I asked for the first visit. But not even close to what i got.I know it would have cost alot of money but that was never an issue. The cost to touch up my roots is still slot cheaper than what I've been paying per appointment. But anyway I'm going to stop whining now, lol.

when i bleached my hair years ago, i am dark brown, the first week was great (but it killed my scalp) then the little roots looking like dots (my hair was in braided extensions) started popping out and the roots were...awful! but for the week i was totally blonde, i can say blondes may have more fun! lol it was interesting, people DO react differently to you...however it think i look better in dark hair...complexion wise- but try it, it is certainly fun till the roots start! i have a pic of my blonde braid extensions have to find it...

I have told my stylist exactly what I wanted and everytime she was like ok cool we can do that. And everytime it came out basically the same.Plus(now that i'm on to her) I specifically remember her being like wow looks really good when she would take off the foils. And someone always seemed to manage to stand nearby enough to comment too.Plus When she would be putting the finishing touches on me all the other stylists would be like it looks so good and pretend like it was some huge transformation.Of course I bought into it.I paid alot of money and got really taken. She said she didnt want to do the whole head for fear of ruining my hair.Which is why I was willing to cut my hair short to get it.But she said that wouldnt be enough. My hair isnt any worse off with the highlights.I have to use alot of conditioner but I did that anyway.Plus I get trims every four weeks. So Its not like I dont take care of my hair.I'm just really mad I let her talk me into the highlights.Especially when I have paid twice as much for full foil highlights every single time and only gotten crown highlights.Believe me its not a matter of communication.I made It very clear what I wanted.

Dark or not, it's still possible- I've heard that red is harder to get
out than brown, and I had bleached-blond hair that I dyed over with
bright natural red. It took two bleaches and a toner to get out of my
hair, but when it was done I was only a little more yellow than I had
been before, and my hair was in decent condition. So if I was able to
get the red out without too much damage, you should be able to go blond
from dark brown.
Maybe you just need to be more precise and assertive about what you
want with your stylist? If you really do want to go blonde, there's no
reason you shouldn't, even if only gradually.
thank you .Thats makes me feel better about it.I think I will probably just go back to natural. As far as cash and maintenance go.My hair is my biggest hobby so thats where they go anyway. But your right it would be nice to have the cash I'm saving from keeping it natural for other things.

LOL! Mocha, I just erased that part cuz while I obviously think that, I don't want to put the kibosh on Longhairdreams' quest for blonde. If she wants it, what the heck - go out and get it. There's the rest of her life to be brune.

Again, I think it comes down to the colorist. Taking our girl Gwen Stefani again, she's naturally dark brown and has been lightening her hair since she was in high school. Her hair is gorgeous and again, done by pros. So sure it's possible.

Thats the thing good stylists here are few and far between. The salon I go to is already the best in the state.Yeah i will most likely keep getting my cuts from her. There are alot of stylists in that salon.Maybe I need to quit letting myself get pushed around and just pick a different stylist there.

My natural color is a #4 medium brown..i have been reading so many horror stories about not only home bleaching but alot of salon bleachings too.I love blonde hair. But my hairs so dark it would take bleach to get it to the medium shade i want.Right now I'm just really torn between the blonde and going back to my natural color(for health reasons only.I'm just curious how many people have had "good" results without eventually having to dye it over.

Blonde is super tricky. While there's nothing more beautiful that a good blonde dye job, there is nothing WORSE than a bad one. And living here in socal, we see alot of both.
The women I've seen with the most stunning color have several colors of blonde going on, definitely not a monocolor, unless its Gwen Stefani. It's all about the colors and the placement. My understanding is it's several steps and several hundred dollars, but the results are spectacular.
For $500 you should have more than a top head of foil highlights. For that kind of $ here, you can have the best blonde stylist in town.
I've always said that if I were blonde, I'd spend the big $ to have my hair professionally dyed by a colorist who specializes in blonde because the results are so spectacular. Can you just go to another colorist and get what you want while still going to your gal for cuts>

Ok so I know there's a board specifically for this. But I Know people on this board alot better than the color board.I have been having problems with my stylist.Dont get me wrong I like her as a person. And her haircuts are always right on.But About four appointments ago I wanted to go blonde. Not platinum, but like a pretty medium. To make a long story short she convinced me to get highlights instead. And that we would gradually go lighter.Well four appointments later and $500( maybe more) poorer I only have crown foil highlights. My hair is just below my chin and virgin except for the highlights. My hair is still healthy.Even the highlighted peices look pretty good.I'm thinking about going to sally's and doing it myself. For all of you who bleach your own hair or even get it done professionally.Do you think its worth it?How many people are currently happy with your bleached hair?
