hi kate i find most of my clientele are either word of mouth or thru good old yellow pages!! i also advertise on a website for mobile hairdressers and hairdressers in general. amanda advertises on the same site she may be able to give you the website addy cos i cant for the life of me remember it lol!!
metalgirl i have a large alluminium case full of tools and products for cutting and blowdrying, a large hamper full of my colouring equipment,a fold away hood dryer and assorted rollers in a large bag a plastic box full of perming stuff and an alliminium case with my hair extension tools in. i have a room at home with all my stock in and i just top up my boxes and cases when i need it.i only have a little peugeot 205 gti but it all fits in lol!! as for the clients kids hassling me.. i find a cattle prod works well!! and the patience of a saint is a bonus!!
I am one of Leanne's clients and the colour that she uses to get my black/brown hair blonde doesn't require heat and it takes around 40 minutes, hope that helps xx I don't have kids so I can't comment on that xx
So how do you carry around all your tools? And when you process you colors, there's no dryer to put them under to accelerate the process, so doesn't that take forever?
Also, how do you get around being interrupted at the client's home by their family?
I would consider doing this if I thought it would work.
I'd love to hear more about how you overcome those obstacles.
hi chick ive been doing hair extensions mobile in the uk for around 3 years and i find it very satisfying as i dont have to hand over a percentage for chair rental.i am a fully qualified hairstylist as well so i can offer the full package, colour extensions cut etc. i would personally recommend mobile!! get yourself some sturdy alliminium cases a folding chair and table and bobs your uncle!!

I was also thinking about 'going 'mobile', but it presents a lot of difficulties.
I have so many supplies that I use to do extensions (because I do about 5 different methods) it would be impossible to carry them around with me, in addition to all my cutting and styling tools. Also, most of my extension clients are color clients as well, so I can't carry around 70 tubes of color and 6 bottles of peroxide very well either!
Another problem, would be having a styling chair that will be adjustable to the right height as you work.
And lastly, I like being in the salon because it's a controlled environment, meaning my work will not be disturbed by the client's screaming kids, or phone calls. When you go to client's homes, your on their turf, and they will control how you work. If your client is interupted a lot at home by kids, phone, etc, than you will be performing extensions at a very slow pace.
Now, I'm sure being mobile works for some people, but it just presents so many more challenges that to me it doesn't seem like it is worth it.
Yup, instead of just doing family and friends hair, i've decided to make it official, sort out insurance, suppliers, and advertising!
Should i start off mobile and rent a chair at a later date if i decide i want to or rent a chair first and go mobile when i have built up clientelle???
