True...it shows a level of commitment to the part. However, we shouldn't underestimate the "gimmick" value either. Anyway, in the end, this kind of exterior thing doesn't determine whether you're a good actor or not.
She's a very brave actress too. A few years ago she shaved her head
completely for the play "Wit" (about a woman with terminal cancer)
which eventually played as a 90 minute TV movie in the U.S. But when
performing on London & Broadway she had to stay bald for weeks, and
not many star actresses would commit to that.

Not sure if the uglies who play uglies win Oscars. Usually it is the beauties pretending to be uglies, that win them (genuine acting ability usually has little to do with winning an oscar--look at Hilary Swank. Now she has 2 and I'm still not convinced that she's a good actress!)
