QuoteReplyTopic: Putting the Fun Back in the Board Posted: March 18 2006 at 9:53am
Locks of Love only becomes controversial when someone bashes it. If people
refrain from bashing it every time someone says they're cutting their hair for
Locks of Love, then other people won't defend it. Just let it go. Ignore that
someone is cutting their hair for charity and just focus on the haircut.
When someone says "she looked better with long hair" and that's it, it really
doesn't add anything to the board. Tell us why she lookds better with long
hair. It can become confrontational. It's especially conforntational when
someone says a woman with shorter hair looks plain, momish, like everyone
else, or like a man. Yes, I know that's your opinion, but think how others are
going to react. You're not writing for yourself. That's what blogs are for.
You're writing for everyone else. Wouldn't long hair lovers react negatively if
someone said about those same things about a woman with long hair?

Hal's Post "Fatmoogas, the fact that you have never read of Krammer/Gord liking a short hair cut on a woman reinforces the fact you are really just newbee here, dispite your posting record. That being said you can really only speak to the "post" Fatmoogas era. Your posting style has change this board more than that of any one person, that I can recall. Good or bad change.. I'll save that for another post.
Are y'all saying Kramer & Gord are the same person? Come to think of it, it has been a while since I've seen Gord's name on a post.

Hal, it was a joke. But I will agree to the lack of sleep theory, my 3 year old and I are sharing ear infections. Thanks. Holidy Inn? Maybe I'm too old to understand that one

I was going to write a long response, but JerkyFlea said it all for me,
and beautifully. Except one thing: the only reason I didn't mention the
"look at her hair" posts is I didn't want to go overboard with my
complaints and upset everyone. Which is the same reason I didn't
mention particular threads or posters by name. Just practicing restraint.
Your hair is your best accessory; wear it with STYLE!
Can't remember Kramer ever saying that he liked a short cut on a woman. Seriously though, the only issue that at present seems to cause major friction on the board is LOL (and very likely Curly was referring to recent posts on this made as a result of the Ann Curry thread). Again, I respectfully suggest that beyond the odd reference, this is not the board on which to have major discussions about LOL.

I am surprised the turn this post has taken, I really thought posters would either pass it by with almost no responses or post "Hey, good thoughts Curly".
And lastly, I feed my hair adiction while attempting to keep my day job so I have nither the want or time to spell check my posts. Yes, I really do spell this bad and type even worse... anyone wishing to correct my spelling, typing and grammar problems, please feel free to do so... I'll not complain.
humm.. maybe this post needs to be moved too...lol

And my point is this thread is only very peripherally about the whole LoL discussion. Much of Curlyfan's points (and mine) don't have anything to do with LoL.
And though it is rare, Kramer has actually liked styles that weren't long. Really, it's happened.

Actually, Curlyfan is very mistaken if he believes there was some golden time in the past when everything was "fun" and there were never any angry posters or postings.
Au contraire, mon fraire (sp?). Note the date joined on my signature to the left. Been here a bit longer than you (as has Curlyfan, who didn't officially register until last year). There was indeed such a time and several folks have been kicked from this board and site for getting a bit carried away and driving the board far from it's purpose and reason for being.

Um, not sure if you intended this to bolster your argument, but it actually supports Curlyfan's...

Would you say the same of me just because I don't post constantly? I read this board everyday. Just because he, I, or others don't post daily is not a sign that we are absent, more a sign of we don't feel we need to comment on every post that goes up on the board. People differ on what thoughts they consider worthy of a post.

BTW, why on earth should Kramer say he likes short hair if he doesn't? Would hearing this give some kind of vicarious pleasure to the other members here? I don't think so.
Never said he should. KramerGord will lament every long hair cut that is mentioned on this board. Bob S will see every long hair cut as a tragic violation of the woman on which it was perpetrated. Others will praise every short cut. His point is if we know that's what's coming then odds are when I see the poster's name and can guess what they are writing, I'll blow right past it. If they take the time to give some additional angle to their opinion, or periodically go against what you'd expect, then I get interested.
Every once in a while when Kramer extols the virtues of a medium to short style, I'll get very interested because something about it had to peak his interested. Am I'm curious as to what that could be. Makes for more interesting reading. Make sense?

Hey, so he didn't hit them all. Nobody's perfect.

As for good grammar, correct spelling, etc. It's a nice ideal--but I don't think any of us are going to be able to teach Hal to spell correctly! Furthermore, it's best not to be obssessed about this on a hair board. I remember that some time ago, JF criticised a poster on this kind of basis and it turned out that the writer involved was physically disabled.
Point taken. However, for those of us who have the ability to make our posts coherent and readable, it's common courtesy to do so.

Almost 450 views as I write this. Discounting multiple views by the same people, if 100-200 folks got something out of his posting his suggestion, them I'm glad he did it. And my guess is that those that chose not to be interested are generally the very ones that SHOULD be reading it.

The problem is that those who prefer long hair in all circomestances will always have a tendency to be down on LOL, on the basis of a natural predisposition. Short hair lovers will be more positive. I still say that LOL should be discussed on the Hair Politics board. The odd reference here is fine, though I believe a whole thread would be inappropriate: that's hair politics! Keep it simple and if you have more to say, go to the hair politics board!

Well, glad to see I've generated some respectful discussion... :-)
Hal, I got the humor in your post and appreciate your response.
SSJockey, I do agree that LoL in particular merits discussion since it's
hair-related. I would ask, though, that we start a separate thread for it
and keep it contained in that thread, so that those of us who want to
read about Ann Curry or whoever don't suddenly find ourselves reading
20 consecutive posts on LoL thinking we were still talking about Ann.
(crawling back under rock now...)
Your hair is your best accessory; wear it with STYLE!
Hal, shut up! You think every thread looks better with short hair and I'm sick of it! Now Kramer will show up and tell everyone how hot this thread will look with long hair and how this thread was an idiot for getting it's hair cut in the first place!
Hannebash.... not to sharp today huh? Not eating well? Lack of sleep? Maybe you can spend a night at a Holiday Inn soon. My statement about "short hair" was my admission of guilt followed by my agreement with Curlyfan and then my promise to try and do better. But you just want to be mean?........ oh yeah.....let me not forget this ->

I see no reason to go through the LOL arguments at all (at least not on this board), seeing that the results are always totally inconclusive anyway. References and the odd short opinion is one thing. However, it becomes very tedious when one self-righteous post succeeds another with boring regularity.
Well said. Harumph, Harumph, Harumph as the cabinet of William J. LePetomaine said in "Blazing Saddles".
And to ssjockey, I agree the LoL argument and other cycle through from time to time, but I think the larger points can be summed up pretty simply: Think back to the earlier days of the board and how many posts or threads you simply skipped without reading vs. today. How many times to do you blow right past responses because you know what they are going to be five words into reading them? That's assuming the post is longer than five words ("She looks great!")
To me the most important sentence in Curlyfan's whole post is "Post thoughtful opinions, not old standards." Pretty much sums it up for me.

While you make some excellent points, I must say that this board seems to have this arguement, long v short, LOL & Wigs For Kids & Great Lengths, every couple of years. As long as we keep it respectful, I think they should be vetted here every now and then. To ignore what people think and feel is to first ignore reality and second defeat part of the purpose of this board.
I may get frustrated with the seeming lack of tolerance that both long and short hair folks show at times, but I never take it personally. When people talk about their preferences, that is just that, their preferences. It doesn't make them good or bad, right or wrong, it just makes them individuals.
Things would be pretty boring if everyone always agreed about everything else.
